Umnumzaan - rust?

I purchased a used Umnumzaan off the exchange and just noticed what appears to be rust on the thumbdisk where it meets the blade? Is this some type of locktite or actually rust? I love my new CR knife and I'm afraid I've started a new addiction, but I was curious what this was or if anyone else had noticed anything in this area. Thanks.

Edited to add photos for the angry Belgian. With all that great beer how can someone be so .

Not the greatest but the best I could do with the wife's point and shoot nikon.

Excuse me my strong language, but how the f*** are we to know if it's rust or not if we don't see the knife.

The least you could do is show a picture of the alleged problem.

Kind regards,

Jos

Wow, is everyone in Belgium that friendly? Way to welcome a new Chris Reeve owner to the club Jos. Bushmaster- congrats on your first Reeve. I own a Zaan and have not seen anything like that. My guess is that it is some form of loctite that was pushed out through the threads when the studs were tightened down. Have you tried cleaning it with anything?

I took it apart this am and cleaned and lubed it. It's in a tough spot to get to but I tried to wipe it down and used a plastic dental pick I use on my pistols. It didn't seem to be stiff enough to really get in there though. I'll probably grab a metal pick today if I'm out and try it. Like I said I'm not really that concerned just found it "odd". My thought was some type of locktite or grease.

Thanks for the friendly response also. I usually hang out in the Busse forum so I'm used to everyone being a little drunk and very friendly. :)

I've had a few rusty spots form around the thumb stud on my Umnum but it is literally just
a few light spots. It tends to be on the flats of the blade as well and not just round the stud.

I may be wrong but it doesn't look like rust. Wrong color. It appears to be some sort of locktite or something that the former owner may have cut that got squished up around the studs. Just a possibility. ;)

While it may or may not be rust, the base of the thumbstud is a typical place for moisture and contaminates (sweat, finger salts) to dwell, and thus cause rust. I've observed this with many blade materials -- ATS-34, BG-42, and S30V, to name a few.

I bet that's right.

Welcome to the club. It doesnt look like rust to me. Possibly the previous owner tried to seal the lug on or put something on there

Anyway, enjoy your Umnumzaan!

Kind regards,

PS. You are right about the great beer in Belgium, but for the moment I'm working in India, so I can't taste it...

Jos is a good egg, and I appreciate him keeping me on my toes.

BTW, Jos, I STILL don't have that photo done yet, but I haven't forgotten :o.
