I just bought a used umnumzaan from a kind gentleman from Texas, and it's great! Slim, big blade, light, and SHARP...when I open it though, it does not make a sound, not even the faintest of clicks. It's totally silent and that is strange to me...is my lockup secure even though it doesnt make a clicking sound like my other knives? Or is there something wrong with the lock? (lockbar 70% across the tang)

mine does make a "click" when it is opened with the thumb, no strange sounds, just a silent, non vibrant click
a reassuring sound but not a griptilian or hollow handled knife sound, maybe authoritative? lol

doubt there's a problem with yours.. ;)

Soooo, you've got two things going on here: One, as previously mentioned, are the o-rings. They help silence the thumbstuds tapping on the frames slabs. Two, the locking-bar has a piece of ceramic sphere, thereby reducing the amount of material making face contact with the bevel of the blades lock-stop. Where as most knives have a straight, face to face contact, which allows it to reverberate down the lock, this has to travel with the ceramic ball, which in reality, literally just slips across the face to a stopping point, thereby ensuring 'no-sound.'

The more or less unique sounds of the Umnu are part of its charm! :D

Hmm, I've owned two Umnums and they both made audible clicks when opened. Are you opening it very slowly?

Completely normal. I'm on my third Zaan, and each has a "silent" lock engagement. I used silent in quotes because it is not literally silent, but seems to be silent in comparison to any other liner or frame lock. It's the O-rings that make it silent - a very nice feature IMO. This seems to be the "tactical" blade in CRK's lineup, thus the o-rings for a silent deployment.

The zaan is virtually silent. Its just the overall design of it. My tanto zaan though is louder, but its very well used and engages at about 85-90%. The zaan also has a different lockup % vs the sebenza. With the sebenza, spec is supposed to be in the 50-75% range. With the zaan, it starts in the 70's and goes up to the 90% like mine. The lockup is designed differently is all.

Use it and enjoy it, its a workhorse of a knife.
