We closed the thread entitled Umnumzaan Detail Photo Request because the topic of discussion had turned from product to people, which has no place in our forum. I do, however want to address the initial question.
The process of staking has been around for centuries and is still used in many manufacturing processes. There are probably at least two dozen applications in your motor car alone, not to mention a multitude of other every day products.
The staking on the Umnumzaan is not done freehand we use fixtures to ensure accurate placement of each punch. There have been slight changes in the staking since the early Umnumzaans, so if a current knife looks different than an older knife, there is no need to panic! The staking of the lock face/detent ball in the Umnumzaan only needs to hold the ball in the hole; there is no other load on the ball and all the loads are pushing it into its hole/recess.
To date, we have not had to replace or repair any Umnumzaan with this problem. If such a problem ever emerges, you know we will take care of it. Until that time - if it ever comes - lets focus on actual problems instead of getting derailed on perceived problems. Please dont think for a moment that we dont appreciate questions about our knives, especially ones that clarify new concepts, like the use of this ball in the Umnumzaan, that are ground breaking in the knife industry. It is as a result of having been involved in manufacturing all my life that I am able to draw on tried-and-tested concepts and implement them in progressive, innovative products.
