We closed the thread entitled ‘Umnumzaan Detail Photo Request” because the topic of discussion had turned from product to people, which has no place in our forum. I do, however want to address the initial question.

The process of staking has been around for centuries and is still used in many manufacturing processes. There are probably at least two dozen applications in your motor car alone, not to mention a multitude of other every day products.

The staking on the Umnumzaan is not done freehand – we use fixtures to ensure accurate placement of each punch. There have been slight changes in the staking since the early Umnumzaans, so if a current knife looks different than an older knife, there is no need to panic! The staking of the lock face/detent ball in the Umnumzaan only needs to hold the ball in the hole; there is no other load on the ball and all the loads are pushing it into its hole/recess.

To date, we have not had to replace or repair any Umnumzaan with this problem. If such a problem ever emerges, you know we will take care of it. Until that time - if it ever comes - let’s focus on actual problems instead of getting derailed on perceived problems. Please don’t think for a moment that we don’t appreciate questions about our knives, especially ones that clarify new concepts, like the use of this ball in the Umnumzaan, that are ground breaking in the knife industry. It is as a result of having been involved in manufacturing all my life that I am able to draw on tried-and-tested concepts and implement them in progressive, innovative products.

Thanks for the clarification.

As always, we appreciate being able to hear directly from you on matters such as this where getting the correct information right from the source can definitively--and hopefully permanently--put certain questions to rest.

Thank you for taking the time to provide some insight into your process and methods. I'm sorry my original tread got so derailed, once again thank you.

Someone send that man back to the tool room. I want my Nyala!!! :foot: :D

Sorry, seriously: thanks, Chris (and Anne, and Heather) for all your support and time.

Didn't think you would.:)
Getting the answers out there is good for business.
I realized as soon as I disassembled my Umnumzaan that the ball wasn't coming out through any circumstance I could imagine.
