Are the Umnumzaan and the Startac the same knife? I'm a little confused on this subject. If they aren't, what are the main differences? Does anyone have a preferance?

Startac is the wilson combat exclusive version of the Umnumzaan

Same knife, different handle texture.

It's a umnumzaan with different milling on the handle. I like it, it looks a little more interesting than the original. Very nice knife once you know its quirks.

FWIW I've owned both and find the startac a little less comfortable when gripping hard, although I also find it more aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks for the help guys, have either of you (or anyone else) held both of them? Did you like the feel of one over the other? And is there any performance differences?

It seems every time I narrow down my search on what knife to get next I get overwhelmed :grief: So I'm DEFINITELY either getting the Umnum or the Startac. Both are way out of my price range but I'm bound and determined to have one. I'm selling my Emerson mini cqc-7 and my CR 5.5 Green Beret to make this happen. :D

I like mine. It's got some ergonomic features that I think make it a little better than the Sebenza, but it is still a little on the thin side. The sunburst milling affords good grip, even while wearing gloves.

On the downside, it isn't very easy to open with gloves or if wet.

On the Star-Tac the Wilson Combat StarBurst pattern adds a nice aesthetics touch but gives me better grip traction. I prefer that over the standard CRK Umnumzaan so that's why I have the Star-Tac (first one below).

Thanks JDunn thats good to know. I'm surprised that the only real difference is the handle. Unfortunately there is literally no where in Jacksonville, NC (where I'm stationed) that has these knives. At least that I've found yet. I would love to get my hands on them and compare but it's hard. Is it still possible to get the one(s) with the bigger pivot?

Wilson Combat is the only retailer of the StarTac. You'd need to look on the secondary market for a big pivot version.

Also the startac looks thicker/wider from top to bottom is it? Or is that just the way its ground?

EDIT:
I know there are two different pivot systems (sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology) on the Umnum and the startac, does anyone prefer one over the other? Is there a difference in function between the two? Or stability? Going by looks I definitely like the older models. I just didn't know if the newer ones were somehow built any better.

Functionally the pivots perform the same but the newer style is easier to adjust with common tools.

As for the jimping... I personally think the older jimping is both aesthetically and functionally superior.

Thanks a lot Jdunn you've been incredibly helpful. Now I need to find someone selling an old model startac :(

I have both a Star Tac and a regular Umnumzaan, both old pivot. I do prefer the Star Tac both in looks and feel. I will say the regular is less abrasive on pockets.

Well, I think I've come to a decision and I'm going to get a Star Tac. I probably won't be able to get an old style pivot version anytime soon, but as soon as taxes are I will have one regardless.
