Hello All,
I just received my NIB Umnumzaan from KSF by USPS today. Birthday December 2014. The knife looks perfect. I need your help with the tension of the blade when opening. Opening requires 2 hands. One on the scales and the other on the thumbstuds. I used the allen wrenches supplied to loosen the pivot pin but it didn't loosen the blade at all. All it did was move the blade off center when closed. So, I tightened back to the original position (blade centered when closed) and came here because I didn't want to horse around and do something stupid.
Will some one please help me? If this post is in the wrong place............Sorry.

Not wanting to imply you are not doing it correctly, but the Umnumzaan opens differently. If you try to open it with the thumb studs like a Sebenza, it can be difficult.

Your thumb should follow the scale in an upward motion. More up/down than left/right.

Maybe it is a technique issue? Maybe you have a different problem, I do not know. But hopefully you can find the answers you are looking for and get some awesome use out of that wonderful knife.

:)

Yes, RyanRaben, I have been trying to use the thumb stud as I do on my Inkosi. I did read the instructions but I guess I was doing it wrong. I just tried it with your instructions and it works fine. It was a technique issue just as you said. Thank you very much for helping out. And you're right, it is a wonderful knife.

Also be careful of putting tension on the lockbar when opening. I did that for awhile when I first got mine and wore my thumb out for a day.

Glad to hear that you figured it out. I went through the same processes and love the knife now. It is one of the smoothest and most fun-to-play-with knives I have.

When I got my brand new Zaan it took maybe a month of carrying it before I got the motion completely down and the knife to be completely broken in. That being said, once you "get it" it'll seem like the easiest thing in the world, but I remember my thumb aching and my ego crushed because I couldn't get the dang thing open when I first got it.. Just stick with it, you'll be fine.

So, my first (and maybe favorite) CRK was a 'Zaan. I kinda had the opposite problem, learning to open a 21 the "right" way. Funny but true!
