Umnumzaan.. waved?? (FROM THE CRK NOT A USER MOD)

To clairify I mean the blade would be designed with a wave by Chris Reeve NOT a user modification.

So I just got an Umnum in the mail yesterday and pretty much love it. I am pretty sure it will be replacing my Small Micarta 21 for EDC (in the FS section). Its thin enough for edc and tough enough to throw anything at it. I have owned a large 21 and traded it because I personally felt it was a little plain and not my style for this time of my life (24). But the pattern on this Umnum and the shape of the blade..

This could function well as an edc and as a self defense knife in terms of shape and size. And I was thinking what if the Umnum had a waved feature for rapid deployment in case of an emergency? Maybe not for self defense or fighting but a 1 handed emergency situation as well, whatever it may be. I digress...

Do you guys think the Umnumzaan would benefit from a wave feature?? A subtle wave, not like on a endura. I think it might be a complementing feature if done nicely, which doesnt have to be said with Chris Reeve.

Let me know what you think!! would you buy or want a waved Umnum from CRK?? Would it add functionality or just take way from the design/looks??

The Sebenza and the Umnumzaan are designed to be simple, elegant and effective.

I simply don't endorse such modifications that are not reversible. It also goes against what the knife was built for

I really hope you forfeit the idea because I'm sure the resale value would drop drastically.

oh woaa I'm not saying I will do it haha. I dont see how it can be done well/properly as a modification to the existing blade shape. I meant Chris Reeve designing the Umnumzaan WITH the waved feature.

You can wave any folder with a hot melt glue gun, just to see how it works :) Just make a litte ramp on top of the spine like a sharks fin.

When you get sick of it, rip it off and clean residue with isopropyl aclcohol, like it was never there :)

Thanks for the tip but I ment this post to be more about Chris Reeve designing the Umnumzaan blade with a wave and not a user modification.

Yeah there aren't many knives that suit a wave, and I don't think any CRKs do, but it's fun to play with!

Yeah I can kind of picture the Umnum with a small wave.. kinda. Just seems like a "tactical" kind of design and might be nice with a wave it designed right. I think Chris could pull it off if he wanted.

Why are you asking this question specifically about the Umnumzaan? Would it benefit more than any other knife?

The Wave feature is overrated IMO. If you're in a situation where the 1/2 second difference in knife deployment speed would really make a difference, I think you'd be up $### creek anyway.

Yeah, I agree. It seems to go against the design philosophy of CRK in general and I'm good with that.

I for one would probably sell all my CRKs and never buy another CRK product again if they waved any of their knives. Thankfully that will never happen so my collection and users are safe. :p

I have a large amount of experience with Emerson knives and also have a fair amount of edged weapons training under my belt. I personally am not a fan of the wave at all. I have found it to be less the 100% effective so IMO that throws it out the window when it comes to "emergencies". I actually removed the wave from the Emerson knives I used, knives like the CQC-12 and CQC-7a.

A folding pocket knife is a rather poor self defence tool any way, for a number of reasons and the wave changes none of those reasons...... Even in a non combative emergency the wave is of little benefit over an easily manipulated folder at the end of the day.

You mean a wave like on a ZT301 ??? I know I certainly would Not like it. They are a pita to sharpen and I personally just dont like it. Serves no purpose on such a small blade in my opinion. On a kukri, Yes, on a Umnumzaan or Sebenza. NO NO NO !!!

He means a wave opener, it's found on most of the Emerson knives and has been licensed by Spyderco for use on knives like the waved Delica and Endura as well as the Pikal.

I have a combat karambit and to make use of the wave feature, you have to remove it from your pocket pretty fast, causing the blade to slam against the lock-bar (or back-spacer). For an Emerson, this is not an issue because its built for that kind of treatment. CRK however, has rules against flipping their knives open with force; to make use of a wave feature would void the warranty.

Excellent way of cutting through the hype to the real heart of the matter, Haze. CR makes excellent tools - waved knives are toys. I don't see any space in the Reeve world of folding knives for superfluous add-ons. However, if the man does have a mental lapse and starts providing that option, please send your knives to me for disposal. :p

haha WOW!!! I had no idea everyone would be so strongly against the idea! I just thought since his knives dont have the easiest thumb lugs to manipulate it might be convenient at times. But I guess I was drastically wrong LOL as many of you with wayy more experience then I do are against it. Guess it was a crappy thought, i'll sensor myself next time, sorry guys!

While we are all talking.

Why not a WAved Mnandi?

Seriously, Chris reeve waved knife? I don't see it, nor would I be interested, because I anyway take off all the clips of my knives and throw them in my pocket.

The thumbstuds on the Umnumzaan aren't difficult to manipulate if you know the trick to opening them. Do not put your thumb on top of the thumbstud. You don't use an arc-ing sweep to open the Umnum.
Put your thumb on the exposed part of the blade right behind the thumbstud, and push straight forward.
