The O-rings do not change the lock-up, they just dampen the sound to make the knife "stealth" for mall operators.

Ultimate lock-up of an umnumzaan is with the stop pins hard against the slab, as the o-rings crush down and do not hold the blade away from the slab.

Without o-rings you are no worse off for wear and tear than you would be with an Inkosi, which also has the ceramic ball lock face. With it's double lock bar, the umnumzaan will likely still have less direct impact than an Inkosi with its single stop pin,

First, great pic--and I mean GREAT!

Second, here's a thread that's sorta related with regards to lock slip: http://www.bladeforums.com/threads/lockup-problem-with-zaan.1472167/

It doesn't answer your long term no O-ring question, but maybe it'll help.

Thanks! of course its a great pic its a cleveland :)
That does help ill try some new ones maybe these old ones have gone off or the wrong size
Its nice to use without o/rings so if the problem persists ill leave them off

Best. Sounding. Motor. Ever. ....at least when wrapped with a de Tomaso Pantera ;)

OT: past pop culture tidbit for the youngins:

In 1974, Elvis purchased a 1971 De Tomaso Pantera for then GF Linda Thompson. Mr. Presley actually shot that car more than once though, without Ms. Thompson in it ;)

In my zaan lockup problem thread that FMF posted above, CRK told me not to operate the knife without the o-rings as it can cause the blade to crack at the stop pin/thumbstud area. On another note, I have had no problems since the knife was sent back to me. Thanks again CRK!!!

Weird. I have never once read of that happening, not seen any pictures of such a thing. You'd think with the thousands of Imnumzaans out there, someone would have posted at least one cracked blade here. Does anyone have further info?

Cleveland....its been years, since my brother and I put a boss 351 together,4 bolt Cleveland block and cobra jet heads, for our 1/4 mile 'stang. Just a couple of Farm kids, Gawd, the memories, crane made the cam for us, wouldn't idle below 1,800, vapor locked without the cool can full of ice, 110 octane leaded and uncorked would ensure the headache would be memorable. 12 seconds at Firebird raceway, rural Idaho, not quick at all by today's turnkey factory offerings.
We blead for every last second though, made you feel alive and accomplished.

Thank you, Rusty351 Rusty351 , for the ride down memory lane.

Problem solved..

The orings i had came with another umnumzaan, they had been used and must have been contaminated and swelled up a fraction
Fitted some new ones off another knife and it locks up and closes as it should :)

If you bought the Zaan used I would still send it in. The lock tension could have been tampered with. I'd have CRK look it over to be safe, but that's just me. Hope it all works out for you.
