Hello.

I bought one today. The knife is very nice.

I has a situation occur that has never happened before. I reached into my pocket and grabbed it. I suddenly felt this sharp pain in my finger like something had bitten me. I looked at my finger and it was bleeding. It appears that when reaching for the knife if your finger hits the top by the lanyard just right the blade will slice you bad.

I can say this is the first time I cut my self on a closed knife.

Anyone else have this experience or hear about it? I looked around the forum but could not find something similar.

ADDED- Well I took off the lanyard and added gorilla tape to block my finger from sliding in to hit the blade. I also noticed that the lanyard was getting slightly cut by the tip of the knife.

Thanks,
Rob

Sorry to her about your wound. I have had mine for over a month and I can not see any way that the blade can touch your fingers when closed all the way. It sounds like your blade is not seating/closing properly.

Maybe you should try taking it apart and lubricating it. Also the blade should not touch the lanyard. did you buy this new or used?

I am not an expert just a thought. Good Luck

I`ve never had any problems with mine (been carrying it since late october), but then I usually pull it out grabbing the lanyard.

Out of curiosity I`ve just tested whether or not my index finger could touch the tip of the blade in the closed position, and yes I was able to. So I guess it is possible to actually cut yourself if you slide your fingers down the edge of the frame. :(

I`ve also noticed a while ago, that my lanyard is getting slightly cut by the blade tip as well - just like you`ve mentioned. But that is due to the lanyard pin, which enables the lanyard to move around freely.

At first i laughed and thought you must have some skinny finger's...I checked my reg um and its ok but the tanto could cut your finger if you pushed your finger into the frame and slid it across the blade tip.

When i remove my knives from my pocket i pinch the knife (clip and opposite side).

Many knives will bite you if you run your finger in there...don't take this the wrong way but this sounds like a case of carelessness.

I had my Um open in my pocket when I carried it in my left front pocket. Pulling it out by the lanyard, it seems like the blade tab on the back caught on the pocket on the way out and opened the blade. I shifted it to my right front, and have had no more problems, Bart1

when its in my pocket for alonger time, the lanyard on mine kind of crawls into the frame and touches the blade with one of the two strands at the other end of the hang-mans noose, if that makes any sense. not the whole lanyard, only one strand.

as for fingers, no problem for me. no cuts that were not my fault and none with the Um.

Mine was born on 8/25/09, and I've tried my best to see if it was possible to have the tip cut me...there was no way I could cut my finger with the blade closed.

My tip is easily a half millimeter or less away from poking out the end. I found that the lanyard was "causing" it. In the sense that when I slide my finger down to the end of the lanyard nearest the knife it hits very easily. I removed the lanyard and now I grip the outside of the knife to get it out of my pocket. Well that and I have ducktape (gorilla) on the end. I feel Chris would say this is a defect.

How far does everyone's false edge stick out exposed? Mine is about a quarter of the full length. I am thinking of filing it down since it digs into the material the knife is clipped to.

The knife is purchased new from a dealer at the Indy gun and knife show this past weekend with a date on the knife certificate of July 13, 2009.

Sorry no pics to post.

Anyone else have some thoughts? About their Umnumzaan.

Thanks,
Rob

I think you need to send the knife back to CRK....call them and they may even cover your postage.

Why would you need to file the false edge .....none of my umnums false edges will cut butter.

Had mine in pocket and it did the same thing but did not get cut. I keep it in the right pocket with the clip and pulled it out and was like a waved knife. Pretty scary.

bigmark408- my false edge can cut paper. My tip is so sharp though.

I bought another Umnumzaan. The tip on this one is a lot better. I believe I will now contact them and see if I can return it.

Man these are great knives!

Glad to see you bought another.....I'm sure the trip to CRK will fix your issues with the first one....I would ask that they replace the blade with the opposite type of the new one that you bought....you never know...its worth a try.

Personally , the umnum has become one of my favorite knives for edc....I own many customs of all types and believe that the umnum is amongst the very best...amazing for a production knife.

I agree the knife it amazing! Only knife I own two of.

I think I may not send it back now. I have been comparing my two and the blade has so many differences. Grind near the pivot is ground differnt. It is a little wider. It is about 2 mm longer (which I think is why I stab my self). The false edge is different. The sweep of the blade is different. It evens seems like the blade thickness differs slightly. It feels different in the hand. I like it! I think I am going to keep it as is.

After we finish grind the swedge, we are supposed to blunt it with a white spyderco triangle sharpening stick. Unfortunately we must have missed yours. If you have a ceramic or even a natural sharpening stone or stick; three or four strokes across that sharp swedge aught to make it safer and save you the hastle of sending it back to the shop.
BTW we started blunting them when Anne came back from a show with her fingers in bandages. Sorry :o.

I just read all of your posts again. Sorry, this is a different problem. The point is sticking out of the end of the handle when it's closed. We fix that by regrinding the edge bevels at the point to shorten the blade. Nobody at work cared for my idea when I suggested we call it our coupon cutter feature.

Care to elaborate?

thank you

I got mine yesterday. I as see how it's possible to get my finger down in there, but in my case it would require a real, concerted effort to do so.

LOL, yep I was thinking of regrinding it down. Wouldn't take much. But with the duct tape there, there has not been a need too. It's kind of funny to show someone a knife that has duct tape on it. Especially in this price range. Sorry for the bad publicity. It's funny that the duct tape shows while clipped in my pocket.

Thanks for the info!

Thats exactly what Anne told me at Bladeshow West on Saturday. I mentioned that I was going to buy an Umnumzaan but the sharp swedge didn't sit well with me. Glad that it was changed at the shop :D
