Ive seen alot of knives like busses and up-armor and bokers that have a really uneven sculpted surface on the micarta scales. How is this done? What tools do you use? Also when scales are secured to the knife using flared tubing, when do you use to flare the tubing. Thanks in advance.

The uneven surface sounds like canvas micarta. It will take that surface when sanded to about 120 grit and then buffed or blasted.
The tubes are flared with conical punches/dies.

I thought he was referring to scalloped grips. These are done with a small-diameter contact wheel or a round file or rasp.
USAKnifemaker sells dies to flare tubing with, but you can cut the heads off a pair of deck screws and use the bugle-shaped portion to flare them using a vise, usually with slightly rougher results. I use a drill press vise, the short handle limits the amount of pressure that can be applied to avoid splitting grips, which is possible if you use too much force.

great thanks guys. Yes the scalloped scales was what i was refering to. I think I will try on some scraps with my dremel tool 3/4" grinding wheel.
