Un- loading my sharpening stones.

i keep my stones lubed with a little honing oil. i clean my stones with hot water and steel wool. if the stones are really caked up i will boil them for a few minutes then scrub them.

Really? Steel wool? I would think using super soft steel wool would load the stones more. I use comet cleanser on everything, works great.

i should have worded that a little bit differently. i only clean them with steel wool when they are really bad (flea market/ yard sale finds). 90% of the time i use hot water and a sponge.

coat it with baking soda and then pour boiling water over it. The foaming action lifts a vast majority of the shavings.

Steel wool is not the best of scrubbing pads to use when trying to clean a stone designed by humans or nature to abrade steel. For basic cleaning soap water and a stiff nylon brush will be enough to keep most stones useable. For more intense cleaning I've found that not much compares to "bar keepers friend" it is safe to use on any stone and will remove every last bit of metal swarf on the surface bringing the stone to like-new condition in less than a minute.

Barbwire, I'm guessing you have Arkansas stones?
