Un-x-ld

Seriously?

Yes...unexcelled.

It was not uncommon for the manufacturers of yesteryear to have such quips on their knives...case in point...IXL (I Excel)

Now that's clever. :p

I'd always wondered what it stood for. I've been eye-balling an Ebony-handled GEC Scout for a while, marked as such. Seems obvious in retrospect, and yet sorta subtle & sneaky too. Very good.

I've once again learned something new here.

I always liked Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co's "OVB" (Our very best).

Too bad nobody has "DC&H" (Dewey, Cheatham & Howe)

I can probably come up with a few worthy of it but I ain't gonna go there... :p

Too bad nobody has "DC&H" (Dewey, Cheatham & Howe)

Are they associated with the firm DF&H :D

I think UN-X-LD is an excellent moniker for GEC - they're definitely making some of the best production slipjoints out there today.

I had thought this was the case but I didn't really trust my own judgement with it. Good to know :)

Great Expectations for GEC's rendering of this year's Forum Knife. It may be so good that it has XTC on it....

This may be the first time I have resurrected a deceased thread, but I was searching this very question and google lead me here, and I thought maybe this info would be helpful to other (relative) GEC newbies like myself. I've been pondering this Un-X-ld thing for a while now, and am happy that to be able to cross this off the long list of things that Powernoodle doesn't know.

Btw, you guys are Gr-8!

Ah..thank you for resurrecting this. Being a bit new to this corner of the forum, I did not know this.

UN-X-LD was actually a Registered Trademark of the original Northfield Knife Co. Circa 1859-1912? Read David L. Anthony's "Great Eastern Cutlery"

Ha! I had been wondering too. It's a good thing for all of us that I don't ask on everything I wonder about. My wife says I'm a dreamer, but this one was beginning to really bug me, so thanks for the rez.

One of the first times I noticed the moniker was when I was looking at the Templar closely. That didn't help matters! :p

Wow thanks for a new bit of information....I knew about OVB because I used to buy HSB knives....

This one is pretty amusing! It was done during a dispute between I*XL (George Wostenholme - GW) and Empire Knife Co in Winsted. Empire was using a steel with its trademark, that I*XL used in their own knives. The dispute was whether Empire was allowed to use it, and GW apparently badmouthed Empire knives, touting their own superiority of their I*XL knives.
Empire tweaked them back with this "play" on their "I excell" markings!

The edge is worn off, but it says WeXL!
