Hey everyone! Last weekend I decided to replace the wood on my dock, turned out to be pretty easy, yet fairly hard ( physically) work. Got that done, figured, what the heck, I've always wanted a tiki bar, im feeling saucy, let's go for it. Planned it out during the week, started Friday after work, by the end of the day Saturday I had this,

Ready for a roof, this is where my Fiddleback machete comes in. I really wanted to do a traditional palm thatch roof, so a palm frond harvesting I must go. Luckily my patents property has a bunch of sable palm ( saw palmetto) plants on it, and I was given the green light to take what I needed.

This is why it's called saw palmetto, I caught one of these in the knuckle, broke off a 3/16 inch long piece like a splinter into the skin, when I pulled it out it looked like a cat claw

Need to remove them for safe handling

That's cool J. I just rebuilt my orchid shadehouses and considered doing a chickee top as well but never quite figured the weave that the Micosukees use so I didn't go that way. Those fronds are tough though aren't they? I've got some in my yard as well and when they dry they get hard as rock, and can only be worked/folded when green.

Let me guess, you go to Home Depot at Sawgrass as much as I do...?

Ha! Yeah, on the weekends several times usually! And yeah, they definately have to be worked while green, couldn't imagine tring to do it with dry ones. The bottom row has already started drying out. Need to finish it today before the ones I picked yesterday dry out more

Lookin good, Jared! Is that thing Hurricane Proof? :D

I can't wait to get out with my 12" Machete. Jeff still has mine...I don't even remember what it looks like :( hehe, just kidding...can't wait to reak havoc on the woods and make some much needed trails.

Thanks man! I sure hope so, I figure when we get one, I'll lash it down to the dock and hope for the best. Can't wait to see the sheath Jeff does for the machete, his work is always excellent

Thanks! It most definately did! I had actually started with my Busse Zilla, but after I injured my finger on the spine, I could grip the heavy blade strong enough to be safe, so I switched over to the machete which is much lighter and feels less impact while going through the frond stems

Yeah, that's beautiful. Maybe we can host the next Fiddleback Forge quarterly meeting there? Nice machete too!
