Well, I got a surprise about an hour ago. A USPS guy showed up with my Council Tools Velvicut Bad Boy's Axe. If anyone was paying attention I bombarded the Edged tools threads on multiple forums with posts about axes this last month. Trying to decide which kind, make, and model to get. It was a hard choice. I was down to three and decided on getting the one in the middle of the three. I still plan on either hefting a felling axe or getting the GB American Felling Axe.

Before I get to the pics of the unboxing I would like to take a moment to post about the vendor I got it from. I ordered it from omahaknife.com.. Curtis was awesome and went out of his way with his communication with me and just being an outstanding salesman. They also offer free sharpening which I accepted since I'm still learning such thing. The blade came very sharp and the grain was amazing. I'm planning on staining it and throwing on a few coats of BLO, but enough... Here you guys go..

I've got to get one of these when funds allow. That is one fine looking axe and I look forward to hearing how it performs.

I don't usually care for new things...much prefer old. But I must say that looks great. Nice branding on head and haft. A very nice looking piece indeed.
Very good strong haft. If she were mine I would take a little wood out of the throat and run some oil into the eye to swell the timber into that little gap.

It seems this is a company that still has pride in product and presentation.

Well done mate. A lovely tool that will improve with age and last you a lifetime and beyond.

Great axe. I ordered one for myself a couple of weeks ago and I love it. Quality is superb, design is functional, easy to sharpen, and looks great. Its definitely worth every penny over the standard Council Tool Boys Axe: 5160 steel is much better than their standard, best handles are selected, wooden wedge is used instead of an aluminium one, and the overall fit-and-finish is a step above.

I need to get a set of these. A felling axe and one of the smaller to pair.

I just need to convince my self to sell another knife to get it.

I'm kind of surprised they don't put Velvicut on the head some where.

Yea I know. One thing you can do is have the head engraved from Council Tool if you order from their website. You can only do this with the Velvicut line of axes so it makes it unique in some way.

Wow! What's not to like? It looks great and you know it's made out of 5160 - very excellent steel for an axe. You got a nice sheath and literally perfect grain. Plus it came sharp. You're set. Period.

Man, I must have gotten an older batch or something when I bought my felling axe a month or so ago.. my grain alignment was nowhere near as straight and there was no polished edge as it was not very sharp. I still enjoy it though, and it still chops wood! That thing looks sweet!

First time I've heard of other folks doing this! I have long recalled the old farmer's trick of soaking head and haft in a shallow pail of water overnight when I thought to experiment with applying oil drops to the end grain many years ago. This has become ritual for me every autumn whereby the sledges and axes around here are secured upright in a WorkMate and 3 in 1 oil applied to the heads over and over again until they won't soak up any more. Touch wood, I have not suffered from loose heads for over 20 years now.

I don't know if I was clear or not, but I wanted to point out that the edge on the axe is razor sharp, and that is due to Curtis at omaha knives. He offers to sharpen the axes for free. A really nice personal choice from a great company.

Spoke with Curtis today and can't wait to get swinging this American made beauty with his edge on it. Hope to have it Monday.
