How do I deal with a off centered blade? I took a knife apart, and now when I put it back its off centered, I tried taking it apart and doing it again. but with the bad results more or less. Now im scared of taking some of my more high end knives apart as I dont want them off centered.

what happens when a knife goes off centered? does it cut worth or destroys the knife after some time?

thanks

mike

What kind of knife? How far off center? Got any pics? My first thought is a misplaced washer or teflon bearing, but that's pretty much a shot in the dark. If you don't hear or feel any kind of grating or grinding or feel unusual resistance when opening and closing the blade then I would guess that there's no actual damage occurring. Again, that's just a shot in the dark. If you can get some pics up you'll probably get more useful answers.

thanks Salamander,

off centered blade doesnt bother me that much, unless it damages the knife.

I wil take pictures tomorrow when my dad gets home.

My SOG Pentagon Elite was off centered, whihc I traded.

Now its my leatherman C301. its seems like everytime I take a knife apart, it goes off centered.

Likely everything's just fine, not causing any damage at all. It's probably that the two slabs of the handle aren't quite aligned perfectly, so your best bet is to loosen all the screws a turn or two (pivot and the handle screws). Then close the knife, center the blade, and start slowly tightening all the screws, keeping the blade centered. Snug things down a half or quarter turn at a time, so that you keep the two slabs of the knife aligned as they come together. See if that fixes it up.

If your blade is off ceneter , try this.

Loosen all your screws , the ones holding the scales/handles together and your pivot , then partially tighten each one until you get your to your desired place , meaning smoothness of opening/blade center/no horizontal blade play/.
You will have to toy with it to see what I mean , maybe. Sometimes it works right off and sometimes you have to mess with it.

Personally I do not trip on uncentered blade as long as it's not like way off and the lockup is tight , no blade play and opens semi-smooth.
I will take solid lockup and no blade play over smooth opening any day.
