Does anyone use one of these? He has a 2x72" Variable speed with 1 1/4hp motor for $1150.
Looks ok but I was wondering if anyone has used one and how well it works?

Hello,

Save your money and buy a Grizzly 2x72 inch Belt grinder,,they are like 295.00 new, and the only thing i would recommend iss replacing the Flat platten with a True Flat one, other than that,,,, I can grind as good on a Grizzly as i can on my Burr-King.

Remember its not the Grinder that makes the KNIFEMAKER,,,,,,its the TECHNIQUE!!!

PS. The grinder is available from GRIZZLY Emports.

Thanks guys your right I found my Grizzly catalog. They will get my bucks.
Merry Christmas to all of you!

Mag. I have built one of the grinders like Al sells, If you want the variable speed It will cost you quite a bit more than you think. also the 1-1/4 HP is not a grinder to hog with. you need at least 2HP for that. For finish/light work Al's grinder is as good as they come, Rough looking yes, but it does the job very well.

i'm using a little 1/4hp delta, but i'm building a 1 1/2hp grinder with flat platen, and plan on building a solid stainless steel contact wheel platen. the flat platen one has 2 6" contact wheels, one above, and one below the platen. the lower contact wheel is the drive wheel, tension/ tracking is in the idler wheel. i'm putting both on steel stands, with ball bearing casters. so i can move them to the side when i'm done. i'm putting four bolts that lock into the floor near my door, so i can lock it in there, while i need it, and all the dust blow out my doors. it's gonna be one heck of a grinder when i'm done

I use a 2hp Bader and I really like it. I've read where some people say they have had problems with the tracking and with the belt walking when they use a lot of pressure. I must have gotten a really good one, because I haven't had any problems with mine. I'm thinking of buying a second one. I've hogged off a lot of metal with it and when it is time to use a little finese it handles that as well. I think the next one will be a variable speed though.

I can't find the 2x72 grizzly grinder in there online catalog. Am I at the wrong sight? Magnum, I would like to see your grinder when you are finished! The people at Jantz supply say the Burr-King is no longer available to the general public. Has any one heard this?

Merry Christmas to all!!!

I have one of Uncle Al's variable speed 1 1/4 HP grinders. As Pete said it is not a hogging machine. I have a Wilton with a 6" contact wheel and a home made with a 2 HP and a 10" contact wheel that I do most of my grinding on. The main thing that I use The variable speed grinder of Al's is for the handles. Al also has 1" x 72" scalloped edged sanding belts in 320 grit that is just outstanding on finishing handles. The slower speed keeps the material from burning and discoloring and you have the ultimate in control. It saves me a LOT of time when it comes to handles. Al's belt sander can also be adjusted down to 60" but you can't use the platten. I was given a box of 50 belts that were 36 grit and 2 1/2 x 60. Talk about knocking the bark off, in chunks already. If you can afford first class, go for a 2 HP variable speed with your choice of maker. Ray Kirk www.tah-usa.net/raker

do you think i've underestimated it? i'll post a pic of my grinder when i'm done. i'm in the design stage right know i'm working out possible problems, and working on lowering the total cost. well i do have the barstock, and sheet metal for the body, i have 8' of 3/8" x 3" steel. and 16ga. sheet.

Tom. Go for the variable speed on the second grinder , you'll kick yourself later if you don't. Don't know how I did without one for so long.

Steve and Phezzer (and anyone else interested),

Once on the Grizzly page, do a search for "G1015" and it should come up. My friend ran across it accidently and that is how I found it later. By the way, I purchased mine about two months ago. Admittedly, I have never had the oppurtunity to use a high dollar grinder yet, but I think it was money well spent. My recommendation: buy it, play with, and improve it. I spent very little (financially, not time) in improvements and am still thinking of ways to improve it.
Some of the improvements I made:
1. True the platen, as it is not even close. I bent it to shape and sanded on my sanding block, a piece of granite countertop. I also put a radius on the edges of the platen and had to do some filework to get the platen in line with the belt.
2. Lose the rest. It is worthless. I fabricated my own. Email for details if interested.
3. True up the drive wheel. Mine was out of round (at least the rubber, anyway). I flat grind, so I didn't get super exact in this area.
4. I put a shim behind the L-bracket which holds the adjustment knob. It had a strength deficiency.

Thanks Brett,
Good advice is only usefull if you actually use it! Thanks. I will be taking a look at all of those areas as soon as it arrives. I will let you know what I find and pass it along.
Merry Christmas All!

I know "Uncle Al" uses rebuilt motors on most of his equipement. He does not tell you this on his web page. Better ask what you will be getting.

Kaos what is your Email address.I am interested in the tool rest you made for the grizzly. My email address is washburn @ nlamerica.com Thanks

Frog, The DC motors that Al uses for his variable grinders are new ones from a GE
factory overrun, If they were at normal price
the grinder would be about $200 higher. I got my motor from the same source about two years ago.
