A couple of weeks ago someone started a thread discussing Salyans, with the possibility of doing a special request for an 18" Salyan as I recall, and asking for pictures. I promised pics but didn't get to it.

I never owned any of the older Hi Salyan's or "Super" Salyans, just these "Salyan Specials" that came out after Uncle Bill died. Great attention to detail by both the Kami's and the Saarki's make these wonderful memorials to Uncle Bill.

Here are some of the ones picked up in late 2005, all by Bura.

First pic top to bottom:

18.5" 24 oz. antler horn

15" 18 oz. fancy chandan

12.5" 12 oz. neem

(Not shown, 15" models in antler, neem and buffalo horn, and a 12" in antler)

18.5" 24 oz. antler horn and 18" 23 oz. in chandan

Close up of the two 18" blades:

And a final, trying a bit for the Hi logo look: ;)

There are matching "Yangdu Special Katunje's" to most of these, and paired together Yangdu and Uncle Bill's special knives look very striking! All of the Katunje's run the same size, between 13 and 13.5" and 12-13 oz. and are made by Kumar, with one by Sher.

Regards,

Norm

Thanks for posting this thread Norm. You reminded me to post of a very special knife I received from Yangdu during a time of trouble.

A bone handled Salyan with dragon scrimshaw. After the mandatory whack test this one was polished and never has seen work. It stands sentry duty.

All gorgeous knives, but your bone handled scrimmed one is exceptional Howard! Really beautiful work. The 18" models were harder to get, so I was fortunate to get the pair, but lost track of Salyan manufacture after 2006 or so. I tried to get a horn handled one in the 12" size like yours Karda, but the DOTD wouldn't cooperate. I also didn't know Vim ever made any of these.

Jay, your Sher Salyan (I also didn't know he had made any) seems a bit pointier than mine in that size, and is the only one I've seen with something other than a black scabbard. Very striking!

Thanks to everyone for sharing.

Norm

Good morning Auntie!
That is good news.....we loves the Salyan Special.

At 12" I think these are about the size of the original Salyan that is the HI logo in Yangdu's avatar.

To me, they are the most beautiful khukuris HI has ever offered - and that is saying a lot.

This one is otherworldly! Whenever I see a photo with that iron tabletop in the background, I know it is going to be a special knife. I see it's an avatar knife, for good reason!

Ok....now i'm officially jealous of howard and berk.
Those are OUTSTANDING!
I thought bruce had the closest specimen to the original.
berkleys is probably the closet i've seen.

Auntie once mentioned the red scabbard is a sign of adding more chopping power to the khuk:p

Love those Salyans. Although I do not (yet) own one, it was the Salyan that got me turned onto H.I.

I can only hope that when they become available, I;
-am lukcy enough to have my timeing down and can snag one
-have the funds to snag one
-am quick enough on teh buton to snag one

lately I've been taking my wife around, due to her broken ribs, so that has been getting me up earlier and home later, and lately I've been missing all the DOTD stuff.

These are certainly a very, very beautiful knife, and while it could never shine as bright as they man they are made for, it's probably as fitting as tribute as we'll ever find on this earth.

A glass raised for Uncle Bill!

Nice collection, thank you all for sharing

I agree 100% with you Karda.

Berkleys is #1!

Here is that of late Brian Katz, being caretaken by me:

Ferguson took the photo, it was donated by Mrs Katz in a Ram fundraiser. I was just in the right place at the right time with money in my wallet. I intend to gift it back to Yangdu/HI for inclusion in a UB/HI Heritage Museum which one day may happen?
