Uncle Don's Plumb cruiser came home with me yesterday. First, I seperated the head from the haft. Then I cleaned up the haft to be reused. The head was sharpened and nothing else was done to the head. It got re-hung using walnut for the wedge. A coat of BLO was applied to the haft. Thats it.

The head weighed in at 2lb 10oz and after the re-hang the total length is 27". Now it just needs a sheath and then it can live in my truck. I can't wait to come across something I can chop or limb with it.

I think Uncle Don would be happy with how it turned out.

How do you like the size?

I don't know yet. I haven't even swung it yet. The haft is quite narrow at nine sixteens by an inch and a quarter at about 6 inches from the end knob. It thickens back up through the grip so it feels pretty good to hold. I am going to put a couple more coats of blo on it before I take it for a test drive.

I have a feeling it will be a good little chopper and kindling maker in one while car camping at the beach on our weekend surf trips to La Push. Anyway, I think it looks wicked and you shoulda seen my boys faces when they saw it for the first time.

That looks awesome Cedar :)
I've got a little Plumb cruiser myself. I think mines a little smaller that yours though. The head only weighs 2 lb 4 oz.
it's a little guy.
I hope you don't mind if I post a couple of pics. I've had this head for around a year and just hung it a few weeks ago...

Nice job on those you guys. I love cruisers. I know I'm not the only one since they are getting harder to find at a good price.

Plumb cruisers. I've cleaned up the two w/ handles. There are pretty now and gave the head away to a friend since this picture was taken.
I love cruisers.

Tom:)

A really nice axe ---- good job. I remember watching when when the great Dick Proenneke used one just about like yours to build a cabin. I thought he'd choose a 3 1/2 pounder ---- but no way!!

Great job saving that haft. The ones I end up with are usually cracked or bent beyond repair. That whole deal turned out really nice, man. I like that you've already got it labeled as your truck axe. I like that most folks have an axe that lives in their truck. Maybe we should have a truck axe thread.

Yes we should

Its all ready for life in the truck now. I put a couple more coats of blo on it, 3 coats of tung oil and another buffing with the honing stone. I took it out for a test drive today. Well, it never left the yard but you get the idea.

It chopped through some wet madrona and was a pleasure to swing. Extremely accurate. I was acutely aware of that second bit but I suppose I will get used to it.

Splitting with it was an interesting sensation as if felt more like it was slicing the wood. I really didn't expect this cruiser to be much of a splitter. Boy was I wrong. Now I will need to find me a little bit taller chopping block.

I have a feeling it will be a slick limbing axe too.

I did notice after using it for a little while the head was coming loose so I reset the head and drove the wedge back in. I kept an eye on it and noticed that it kept coming loose or slowly slipping toward the end of the haft. I drove the head further onto the haft and sank the wedge even deeper. Hopefully this will rectify the problem. I did have the axe behind the wood stove while putting on the coats of blo and tung oil for almost a week. I am hoping that out in the truck the head stay put. I will be keeping a close eye on it for awhile.

I like this little axe alot. Thank you Uncle Don!
