Wanted to run this by you guys...I bought an Uncle Henry 164 today..looks like a stout fillet knife or a thin, small hunting knife...any ideas as to its intended purpose?...paid $20 and it is new w/leather sheath and no box...that a fair price? I am thinking it may be a crossover one-knife do all type of concern?? Thanks!

libbyhuck,
Great price IMHO.. If you get another at that price let me know!
The 164 Badger (Not to be confused with the 154 Badger) is a middle sized knife. A little thicker than most fillet's but can definatley do the job. I have no idea of its design intention. Its a pattern that was also used in many commeratives.
Stats: Produced 1982-1988 Schrade + stamping

If I am right that my SDU3LTD is a Badger pattern with it's thin stiff upswept 3-9/16 blade, then my unexpert opinion is that it is what I grew up calling a "bird and trout" knife pattern. Let me know if you find a third. One reason I do not collect etched special editions is that the etch and gold plate fill can't stand up to use. And my knife, if it is the same, begs to be used!

P.S.- The Badger name was revived for the later badger series (SX4S, SX4, SX4B, SX20, SX21, SX23).

Larry...I wish I was up on my Schrades...this ole' boy had a shoe box full of them at a sale today....most were new in the box...OT, UH and Schrades...about 30-40 pocket knives, most seemed like stockmans..and another dozen or so fixed and folders...there was another one of the 164s in the box...it appeared slightly scratches but might have been just a bit unbuffed...I bought 3 total from him...got a PH 2 and an OT 250T Folding Hunter...all w/sheath and no box...there was the Schrade that came w/the toothpick and tweezers, I think it is called the Bearhead Trapper or some such, I thought they came w/a sheath and this one did not so I passed on it...I can get in touch w/him so might be able to score you the 164...got to find good homes for Schrades....

Libbyhuck.

I ment the shoebox and all the contents that are worth takeing!
:)

Larry...that boat has sailed...he knows what he has...thanks to eBay...but is willing to part w/them at a fair price I gather...I will see if I can score the knife for you and will post here my success within a few days....which ones of the UH or OT SJs would be worth buying?...there were several styles in brown boxes w/red velvet looking inserts, all NIB including paperwork and outer white sleeve over brown boxes...I am a user type of knive guy like Codger...but the future seems to demand NIB for maximum collector interest and I suspect it will only get worse as Schrade drifts into history....

The best deals have been, are, and will be in the nice users. I have been tracking Ebay sales trends on one of my favorite users for a while now. The prices of that pattern ebb and flow like the tide. NIB mint pieces will always appreciate in value faster then a mint one. And mint faster than a nice, etc. I liken it to the collector coin market. Sometimes a popular high production issue will appreciate far beyond it's true value for a short time. Sometimes the truly rare will go begging for a buyer. Best values are in the nice to near mint users. Think "BU, AU, VG, G, etc", just like coins.

Sometimes it is not so bad being "used"! :D

I agree with Codger. The best find for me are the slightly used hidden away treasures in the shoebox. Over 1/2 of my stuff has been used. I love working them back to life. Since I don't sell my stuff its just for me anyways.

My 1st springer looked like someone had attempted to put a design on the edge when I rediscovered it. Just me as a kid using it as kids do. Looks a lot better now.

Let us know what treasures you find.

Hi Libby,
I don't have the experience of many others in here, but it seems they may have missed some of your questions, so let me share a few comments if I may.
The brown boxed items(simulated wood w/gold "Uncle Henry" logo) you mentioned are older than the blue Schrade or silver UH boxes. My 153UH in the "wooden" brown box was from early 80s, but I have seen some that apparently were form the 70s. Someone else in here probably has more exact knowledge.
Also from what I've seen lately on ebay there is a lot more OT stuff out there than UH, so I would give the UH NIB ones more consideration. Superior condition and complete with papers and box never hurt coins or knives. Then age and scarcity. Of course as all those factors merge, then price enters the mix. At least it does for me, those deep pocket folks just BUY! BUY! BUY! :D Cya

Oh! Until I read this I thought a 164 was an old Volvo 6 cyl. !!!

Well, everyone has certainly given me a bit of info...it was sweet to open the different boxes and discover their contents...sort of brought back Christmas memories...I will focus on the UH offerings...most of them have the simulated stag, correct and are SSteel? OTs are carbon? Is that a solid rule of thumb or a generalization? The boxes were all brown w/gold letters and said "Pocket Knives Just Like Grandpa's" or some similar jingle...BTW it would appear to me that the SJ pocket folders are more in demand than the larger folding hunter type of offerings and they in turn are more in demand than the Fixed offerings....here in Montana Fixed blades run about 50/50 in use against folders when hunting based on my casual observations....so I don't understand why the fixed are not as popular elsewhere...might be some anti-knife sentiments or daily practical carry issues...I am a BIG fan of SJ folding hunters, never met one I didn't like and don't understand why a SJ folding hunter is worth about even money to a pocket knife of 1/2 to 1/3 its size? I bought an UH 285 Trapper at a pawn shop for $5 in decent condition...and saw there was a new one in the shoe box...what would be a fair price for it? The clerk at the Pawn Shop was going on about how good Schrades were and looked at me like I was crazy when I told him they were defunct...these are going to be the people who will buy and use a Chinese Schrade for some time w/o even realizing they have bought an imported knife...

Hi Libby,
One thing I'm looking for if you don't mind checking the "shoebox" for, is a small Schrade Walden 708 2 3/4 ". Has the Schrade Walden on front tang of master blade and the 708 on back tang same blade. Has delrin or bone jigged handles with a crest shield. Mine has dark brown handles, but only two I've seen on ebay had black delrin handles.
I have one now (found in a parking lot in the early 80's) that was apparently run over prior to discovery. Missing one bolster and the liner beneath is slightly bent, making the small blade hard to open. Figured be cheaper to replace than to repair. Has a nice "karma" about it though, hate to just give up on it. Some folks claim I'm a soft touch for saving cars and pets from the junk heap, guess it's spreading to abused and unwanted pocket knives now! Guess there are worse vices to have though.
I think the brown boxes with "Knife like granpa used" is older than those with just "Uncle Henry" in gold script. Someone else here probably knows the date changes better than me. Thanks for the help and continued good luck on your "shoebox " caper!

Wosey..I will look and see if there is a 708 available....I had to go reasonably close to the shoe box owners today so stopped in again and scored the last 2 164s he had...so Irv[Larry] and Codger 64 I have one each for you...if you email me we can get these to you guys...he did have a bunch of UH 885s...they looked like stockmans and he wanted $33 ea...I think eBay would offer similar prices....so Larry and Codger...going once.....

Libby,
Email is on the way :)
Thanks
Larry (lrv) its really a small L rv

Thanks Libby,
If he does have a 708 and it's as much as the 885s, LEAVE IT THERE! lol.
The ebay 885s are where the 897s were a few months ago, going for $25-35. Meanwhile the 897s have cooled off, seeing several go for $15-20 lately. How you feel about these fluctuations I guess depends on if you are buying or selling.
$20 is about my limit right now on the 708 caper, not sure if that's realistic or not. Cya!
