I've seen a few references to these lately, never heard of them before. Are these genuine, or some kind of fake?

Thanks -

They've come up a few times in the last few years, here and on the auction site. They are similar to an 897UH, but stubbier with only a single center pin. Sometimes has a razor finished edge. They are authentic, with a SCC+ stamping, likely an early 70's vintage. There is also the 886UH, which is a similar version to the 885UH. It is thought maybe these were an SFO for a hardware chain. I have one, and it is a solid old Uncle Henry.

For reference, pictures of both knives.

:Dgot my 898uh in---wow i like its thickness. the main blade has a noticeably thicker back spring than the spring the other two blades ride on. it is a stubbier knife, but makes up in thickness. would have been a popular model i think. the tang stamping is light and is obvious its not of schrade power stamping. made by camillus in the 90's is what ive been told----brady

I'm thinking pre 1990's, I've seen several offered in brown box with cardboard inserts, but never with and COA. I have an 898 in a brown box, like Rusty's examples. And I have the loose 886UH. Both are great looking knives.

I've heard it was an SFO for a hardware chain, but never anything definite on this. The tang stamp is unique to both this and the 886UH, to my knowledge.

:foot:thanks hal and micheal:thumbup:
.......now for a 886....dang i think my list gets longer as the collection grows:D

An 898UH just sold on the bay the other day for a whopping $14+. I was watching, but ended up having to do stuff for the woman and forgot about placing a bid.:(

Look closely at the bolster in post #5. Camillus did not use the Swinden key bolsters with hidden pins. That is how they wound up with the contract for the Buck 300 series knives that Schrade had been making.

855UH is a large stockman (SCHRADE/USA 855UH Tang)

Don't forget the 855UH and Camillus made 8OT.

What in the world is an 855UH? And how would one recognize a Camillus 8 OT?

Michael meant 885UH, there is no 855UH. 855 is an open stock pattern, 3 1/4" stock knife, usually, though sometimes a jack. However, Craftman and Primbles with Staglon in this size are out there.

Well, no one is perfect. But in this case, as with the 898UH, I have the Camillus S-card for the 4-1/2" 855UH and the 8OT as well. The 855UH is bladed like the 8OT, but stainless and appears to be made on the 8OT frame since they share blade dies and springs.

I promise you guys, I don't usually make this stuff up. ;)

So, you think there really is an 855UH, and there is a Camillus 8OT? And both are 4 1/2" long? That is a sizeable difference over the standard 8OT and 885UH. If this is the case, I'd sure like to see these two.

Or this card has a typo meaning 885UH? Looks like this card was typed up in 1986.

I was looking at the spring length.. perhaps that was before it was machined. At any rate, both list the same spring and blade dies. Dale has told us that he has seen the 8OT with pins thru the bolsters, if I remember correctly. Where is Dale anyway?

Oh, and the S-card for the 8OT is dated 1986 also.

What does SFO stand for? I've never come across the abbreviation until recently, lately I've run into it in the context of these forums about 10 times.

Thanks,

SFO means Special Factory Order. Sometimes it was just the addition of an etch. Other times it was a store brand tang stamp, special handle material, custom shield, special packaging, any or all.

Here is the 897UH pattern altered for Cotter (True Value Hardware) with their Master Mechanic tang MM897 and shielding:

All references I found in the last couple of years compared the 898 to the venerable 897 UH, and indeed, the shapes of the blades is very close. But, in addition to the differences in the handle pins, my 898, much to my surprise when I received it, is about the same size as the 834/34OT.
