I have been given a Uncle Henry gift set by my Grandfather. He believs he picked it up in 1981 or 82. It contains a 164uh badger and a 885 premium stockman. Both brand new never been used. Still in the box and wrapped in plastic. My question is. Are they valuable? I was considering using the badger as my white tail knife and the stockman as my pocket knife. I dont want to ruin a valuable possesion. I already have knives I use on a daily basis so its not a must that I use them. What do you guys think? Should I use them or keep them as collectors item?

That SGS-2 set was available in 1983: http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/FLYERS/1980s/pages/SC83-37-2.htm

Dealer cost was $20.63 and suggested retail was $55.00: http://www.collectors-of-schrades-r.us/pricelist/images/1983-PRICELIST.pdf

I think you could get $100 for it on a good day from the right person. Badger was only offered from 1982-1988 so it's uncommon but not impossible to find.
885UH was offered from 1973 to 2004 so it's the more common pattern of the two. ( http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/schrade_knives/price_list/uncle_henry.php )

Personally I don't like to break up mint gift-sets but that's just me. I guess you need to decide "What worth makes it valuable?". They would make great users too and they are yours so it's all up to you (they won't be worth a grand anytime soon).

The right seller with good pictures might get $150.00. I've seen the 164UH sell for $100.00 by itself, and the 885UH can get as much as $60.00. Sets never seem to bring full value, but breaking them is kind of a bummer. I'd hang on to them, that set is not too common. Great pairing of knives too.

Thanks guys. I am going to keep them as a set and in the box. One day I will pass them down to my son. I really appreciate your feed back.

+ 1 on Hal's comment!!!

They "DON"T" make the originals any more:mad: so it is up to you use them knowing your Grandfather owned and gifted to you or keep in as close as can be to factory condition and pass on to later generations a Cherished piece of by gone history!!??;)

Which ever option you choose will "NOT" be wrong IMHO!!
