I just got into collecting schrade knives and found myself quickly amazed by the Uncle Henry Lockbacks. I've since gotten ahold of an LB1, LB2, LB3, LB5, LB7, and LB8. But I have yet to even see an LB4 or LB6. I was wondering if these knives were ever even produced. I figure surely they were but I've looked pretty hard for these but always come up with nothing. Does anyone know anything about these two models or even better how I could get ahold of them.
Thanks,
cykc

Welcome to our forum! You've done well to find the LBs that you have!

Robert Clemente addresses the LB4 in his book, and there is just not much for him to write about. He calls it "the most illusive and rare of the Uncle Henry line of knives...". Further speculation on his part is that the knife was made from 1980 to 1982. He can only state that the tang mark is 'probably' LB4, and was possibly made only for European sales.

Someone else will be along shortly to add to my scant information. Oh, by the way, you are writing about real, made in the USA, 1904-2004 Schrades, right? Sorry to ask, but there is some confusion anymore about what is a Schrade and what is not. My apologies for asking.

Relatively new to this forum myself, cykc, so if what I write here is construed as "high-jacking" your thread, my apologies to all, then 100 lashes with the wet noodle and send me on my way...

Specific response to your question: I also have "heard" of the LB4 but have never seen even a picture and have seen no reference to an LB6 before..

My "highjack" question or hopefully a trailer to yours is this: what constitutes an "Uncle Henry" in this series. I have two sets of the LBs complete except for the 2 & 4. One set is clearly marked Uncle Henry, usually on the tang, except the LB8. The other set is tang-stamped Schrade or Schrade + over USA. I have seen these "types" being presented as Uncle Henrys, in boxes labeled Uncle Henry, but without the box, how would one tell??? Understanding that an Uncle Henry is a Schrade is not too difficult even for this country bumpkin, but the reverse, gets a bit corn-fusing...

Guess I'm rambling, definitely showing my ignorance... :o

Again my apologies for my poor etiquette. :foot:

I think the LB4 comes from the "Third Generation" knives. The date I have on that series of knives is 1983-1984.
Larry (lrv) or Codger are the ones who could probably help us out on this, and maybe LT. I have not been able to get any of the Third Generation knives yet for my collection. I have bid on one but lost out.
In my experience they are as rare as hen's teeth.

I must be honest with all of you. I didnt want to say anything and let you all know the opportunity that I blew but when I first got into collecting I did see an LB 4 on ebay and had every intention of purchasing it but had to work that night. Therefore it was up to my mother who said "thats too much to pay for a knife" and my father said "surely many more will come around for less than that." I think it ended up selling for 80 bucks or something like that.

As far as knowing they are American made, I am about 99% sure. Because I got most of them before They flooded the market with the taylor junk. There for a while I was under the impression that all of the Taylor stuff was made oversees, though, so I guess it is possible that I picked one up.

Most of the boxes that I have seen from the Taylor knives are very distiguishable from the older ones though. So I am under the impression that that is a very good indicator. In which case I know that the LBs I have are 1904-2004.

All of my LBs say Uncle Henry on the tang stamp exept for the LB1 which I thought was because it was too small until I got my LB2 which does have uncle henry on the tang stamp. So I have no idea why or what the difference is dannyb, hopefully someone more knowledgable than me will come along and enlighten us.

I was also wondering if there is a such thing as an LB 9. I won a knife on ebay that the guy quoted as an LB 9 but from all I can tell its just a Limited Edition. Its just like an LB 7 with a guthook and silver bolsters.

I have a couple of LB7's with the Uncle Henry tang stamp and some older LB7's without it. There is a 9OT, which is an Old Timer with a gut hook blade on a 7OT frame. The gut hook in the LB series is still a variant of an LB7.

I have a LB5 & a LB7 neither of which have Uncle Henry on them. I think they were the early ones. Someone gave a date for them on here several months if you can get the search engine to find it.
To the best of my knowledge the Uncle Henry LBs are the newer ones. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

cykc,
It's probably a certainty that all your knives are good old USA made schrades.
Yes, from Robert Clemente's book.. As I am sure Larry has posted before, the LB4 is a third generation look alike. Cool knife
!
