I have two older Uncle henry knives that I picked up at a flea market. One is a small stockman, the other a trapper. The blades are not marked with Schrade+, they are marked Schrade, and there is a little rust on the tang area of the trapper. the blades have a different looking finish than the new ones. They look and cut like carbon steel. When did Schrade make any carbon steel Uncle Henrys? Anyway, I've carried the trapper for a while, and after i ground and polished the edge to my liking, i havent had to sharpen it.Seems to hold an edge better than the 440A. Thanks for the info. F_M

Some more info on the two Uncle Henrys. They both have a serial number on the liners. was this a common practice or a special edition? I have a current Uh with Schrade+ on the tang. it does not have a number on the liner.
Thanks, F_M

I lost my 5" version of the Sharp Finger.
Have these been out of production?
I can`t find one. Mine had a nice laced sheath.

The Trapper that you mention was most likely the 285UH. It started out in 1969 with high carbon blades. The catalogs don't list it with stainless until around 1977, but we probably started using it earlier than that (maybe around 1973 or 1974). We think that the stockman you are talking about is probably the 897UH. All records that we can find on the 897, even from the first year of production in 1967, indicate that it was made from Stainless steel, but it was the only small Uncle Henry stockman that we made in the very beginning.

The Uncle Henry line started out when our knives were stamped "Schrade Walden", and it wasn't until a couple of years into production (probably around 1974) before we started using the "Schrade+" stamp, so even though the knife isn't stamped "Schrade+", it may still be stainless. If you have the exact model numbers, it would definitely help to answer the questions.

We did make a few other Uncle Henry's with high carbon steel, but they were all rigid blades (165UH, 153UH, 171UH and 172UH).

Thanks Tim,
Yes the trapper is a 285UH. It has a little rust on the spey blade. The little stockman is a 897UH. It has a number engraved into the brass liner. I have a new 897 that has no numbers. The blade on the old 897, is shaped a little differently. It has more belly, and a more tapered point. Its a fine little knife. Thanks for the info. I was so impressed with my older UH's that I went and bought the new 897 to carry. Glad to see ya'll are keeping up the great work! Thanks again. F_M
