As far as i know, you must be 18 to purchase a knife. Therefore, you are'nt supposed to have one, period.

Anything outside of a SAK, small Case-type pocket knife, basicly something with under a 2" blade, will probably end up causing you much grief and you should just leave it at home. Even the small ones can come into question as to what your business is with it. If the Officer who calls you on it is cool, he may just keep it, Or you may be labelled as a juvenile delinquent and it goes downhill quickly from there.

I never had any trouble. I lived in a pretty small town in Pennsylvania, I carried a knife from the age of eight onward. I didn't look for trouble, and fortunately trouble didn't find me. I don't know how a bigger city would change situation though, it gets a bit more dicey then. Gonzo gave you the safe and careful answer; I have no familiarity with the law, so I can't help on that front. Hopefully Gollnick will poke in here, he's very knowlegeable about laws and regulations. My rule of thumb is don't draw negative attention to yourself, you can avoid a lot of trouble this way.

Scarface and Gonzo There is no offical age limits on carrying a pocket knife in Flordia. There is no law prohibiting you from possessing or carrying just sale (just get someone who is 18 like a older bro or a parent). Now Scarface If you are going to carry, follow all local, state and federal laws. Don't take it to school unless you check first making sure you can (any school to my knowledge in the U.S. that allows a knife at school is a 2.5" blade limit). I'd try to stick 3" or smaller blade. A SAK or a Spyderco Delica seems like the right thing for you. Try to stay away from any black or serrated blades. If you need info on the laws in your area I'd go down to the cop shop. But this page may help you.

I don't know about Florida, but in Jersey you can buy knives no matter how old you are unless the store has a policy against it. They just have to be under an overall lenght of 10 inches and the blade has to be under 5 I beleive.
As for following carry laws... To each his own, but I would carry what I want no matter what. If you are gonna be stupid and show it off or something, don't carry it. However if you are respectable and mature, only taking out the knife when necesary, you will not get in trouble.

I am 17.
Have carried a pocket knife every day, except days when I was at school (Before I started homeschooling) since I was SIX years old.
Have carried tactical knives, such as an Emerson COmmander, since I was 14.
Never had a problem - have even chatted knives with a few police officers, and never had a problem.

The ye, and I do feel this way very seriously, is to carry quality tools, not flea market/gas station crap, and to act responsibly and maturely.
If you carry junk, you lose respect int he eyes of people who know better, like cops. If you act like a punk, you're gonna get treated like a punk.

When a cop see's my Emerson clip, I'm not a teenager - I'm suddenly a member of the club. I KNOW something about serious knives and the clip shows it. Seriously.
Same with a Strider clip or handle I would guess.

well ive allways carried spydercos cold steel and so on real knives and i use them i but i never knew if it was legal or not, usualy a la griffe around my neck and and a spyderco police, i recently got a x2 voyager at blade and i definetly wouldnt carry that thats one scary knife, but i never tell anyone i carry and im not the type that waves them around to all his buddies, so your saying its legal if i carry, also what are the laws on say a fixed blade like am i allowed to carry a strider wp cp

thanks

You need to call the police department in your city. Do not take opinions as facts. Yes, we can carry whatever the hell we want, whenever and wherever it suits us, till you end up in the wrong place, at the right time, and catch a class A misdemeanor for carrying a concealed weapon with "intent".

Play games with the law and such. Kids think that's fun. I caught the charge as a juvenile...

the blade was 3".

the blade was in my CAR.

i was 15 feet AWAY from the LOCKED car.

i was standing around chatting with a friend, yet i went to jail for damn near a year, cuz the judge got turned down by the old lady the night prior. This sh!t ain't a joke.

Want some advice? KNOW the law. Even better advice? Considering law's amazing ability to be subjected to interpretation, always play the safest card you can, and if a cop will give you the "Go ahead" on a particular knife, memorize his name so you can recite it later.

the cops arent always the best source of law, actually.

If you must know, and cant look it up yourself, contact a lawyer. Its worth it if you are that concerned.
Check the Legal forum here on BFC - there are some excellent links there to resources where you can look up laws and statutes on your own. Very useful, I use them frequently.

As for you Gonzo - if that actually happened to you, I am sorry, that sucks. Sounds somewhat far fetched but given the state of the legal system, anything is possible I suppose. No offense meant.

Personally - I dont worry too much. If I do something stupid and get in trouble and there is a knife charge involved because in the act of being stupid I had a over the limit knife, then I probably deserve what I get for my stupidity alone.
I advise others to be aware of and follow their local carry laws to the letter. Personally - I dont always. I make a choice, that says "am I comfortable with X" as my life may depend on X, and if the answer is no, I go to something else. Sometimes that puts me outside the law by an edge or two or an inch or two. That is an intensely personal choice. I advise no one else to make it without a great amount of thought, and taking the time to be sure of their character. I dont advise anyone underage to do it, althought for a few more months I myself am underage.
Or call it civil disobedience and run with it - that seems popular with youth today.
