As no one is talking to me I have 3 questions. Am I in the wrong forum for old khukuris?
Dont like Aussies?
Perhaps wrong underarm? seriously a real novice just wanting to learn about older Kuks , know next to nothing about them (and how to drive this B..... COMP. Rod

Nope, most of us are just waiting for the few who have expertise in the area to speak up.

In the meantime, find one of Bill Martino's posts which have links under his signature and click on the khukri FAQ Howard Wallace keeps updated.

Finally, if you have specific pictures send them by email for Uncle Bill to put up and we'll all guess about them.

It ain't that we're bein' rude and ignoring you, it's just you haven't said or given us nothing much we can respond to at this point. Give an example and we'll be as talkative as all get out.

Thanks Rusty, Guess I am in the same position in as much as seeing as I know so little I dont know where to start asking questions . John Powell has been very helpfull on some specific kukris. But some of the questions that come to mind are , How do you learn how to date the different pieces.
How does a real beginner learn the different names for the parts eg small knives, scabard etc etc.
I am keen to find a fellow Aussie collector if anyone out there knows one.
Thanks again for replying Rusty I was beginning to think I had one of those social diseases that could be communicated via email! Rod:)

Rod,

There are a few of us Aussies here. Not sure about collectors of old khuks though.

I've been lurkin' & buying for about 4 years as well as using khuks out in the bush.

I'm sure we will be able to get things sorted.
:)

BTW Welcome to the Cantina

Rod

Steve, Thank you , super nice scabbard. Wow I cant find anything on ebay like that for that much money. Cheers Rod

Hi Rod,

Glad if I could help. The Egerton book is quite nice - lots of good fold-out plates of various arms & armour. (general tip: if one is interested in a book on/from India, it's generally cheaper, even with freight charges, to buy it from India, or at least buy the Indian edition, which is usually about 1/10 of the price of a N. American/UK/European/Australian edition of the same) It's not of course specifically on khukuris, but it does include a number and gives one an idea of some of the range and form of older khukuris. The book's from the close of the 19th-c. as I recall, so of course there are no 20th-c. objects in it. I don't know if you have some particular type of khuks in mind, e.g. early Nepali, world-war khuks, &c. There's quite a bit of info on the 20th-c. military khuks on Howard's faq page. JP seems to be the world expert, so far as I know. N2S & Berk, amongst others, know quite a bit as well.

also, the ethnographic section of the vikingsword.com forum is a good place to visit - quite a number of knowledgeable collectors there, of khuks amongst other blades (a no. of the people from this forum, like JP, n2s, walosi, &c. visit there from time to time).

best wishes,
B.

Welcome to the cantina good fellow.

i cant wait to get home. i have an old khuk sitting in my armory/bedroom which a friend once gave me. at the time i knew nothing about them. i realy want to post the pic, so u guys can see it and give me ur opinions.
:p

Hi Rod. I was one of those waiting for a knowledgable person to show up. How could I not like Australians? Are there people who don't like Australians? Besides the bomber in Bali? Come to think, venomous snakes don't like Australians, or rather, like them too much!

Welcome and hang around awhile. You'll find out what you want to know about khukuris and most everything else.

Welcome aboard Rod. You did leave yourself a pretty slim margin as to the info you wanted, now that you stuck your nose out a little further people will more than likely talk your leg off.;)

Pffffttttt Pffffttttt! {errrr, uhmm, I mean WELCOME Rod}
...displaced from Bulleen, Melbourne, shortly after birth. Still a CanAuUk at heart :)
