Under Microtech Socom handle inserts

Has anyone removed or had the grip inserts on the handles fall out? Just curious what it's like underneath. Have a Kershaw Blur that has long lost the ones it came with and there are machining or milling marks present. Would have preferred if there weren't but understandably that would drive up costs but was hoping a more expensive knife maybe won't have them.

Your question is weird.

Are looking for a way to detect counterfeiters' work?

Or a way to counterfeit knives?

Honest questions.

No, I am just curious so when they wear out or fall out like they eventually probably will, is my $320 knife going to look like a $40 Kershaw?

Oh!

Apologies!

Depends on your use.

More parts+more use=more maintenance.

Like the Human body, everything has a 'lifespan'. Like a Human, a knife can exist for generations.

Buy it. Use it. Hand it down.

They're not going to fall out, but if they somehow do, just send it to Microtech to get new inserts. People have been using older Socom Elites and original Socoms for decades without the inlays falling out, and you can always reapply adhesive to the insert if needed.

No matter how the good the machining work is under those inserts, the knife will look terrible if the inlays are removed because the pockets in the handle are not meant to be aesthetically pleasing without the inserts.

Edit: this is what a Microtech D.O.C. looks like without the grip inserts in the handle:

Perfect, thanks!

The adhesive on those may as well be permanent, it's the same adhesive CRK use to secure their inlays and I've never heard of those coming apart. 3M sell the tape itself separately, it's not some proprietary stuff Microtech makes, and they had the exact branding for it on their website (I'm too lazy to look it up iirc). You can buy and cut your own if sending it to Microtech isn't a viable option.

That being said the stuff is very durable, there's 20-something ear old Socoms out there still in use, using the old "sandpaper" inlays, and the newer 3M ones are supposedly even more durable. Chances are you'll scuff up the anodization a lot worse way before the inlays become a concern. Use the knife and don't worry about it too much, it's designed to be used but it's not designed to stay pretty forever.
