Hey Beckerheads,
So, I received my first BK-4 last week - I mentioned in another post that it arrived a bit dull, but I'm planning to sharpen it up this weekend.

Just want to ask the group (as I've never seen a BK-4 in person before now - only in vids and photos online) if the BK-4 in the photo looks right. It's a bit smaller (blade-width wise) than I was expecting, but that may just be "the camera adding 10 lbs", if you know what I mean. :p

I've posed her next to my BK-7 and BK-2 for comparison.

Thanks in advance!

I think most of us had that "I thought it would be bigger" feeling...but it isn't.
(I felt the same way when I finally saw a BK6 in real life)

Yep, that's right. I felt the same way. At first I was disappointed it wasn't bigger, but now I absolutely love the 4, it's my favorite woods knife by far.

Think of it as "it was designed for soldiers to carry" kinda thing.

Trying to pack much punch in small packages has been a goal of E's for a looooong time. He's old. :D

Angle geometry, and the sweet spot let's it get shit done.

:D

I did the same thing...held one at a Gathering a couple years ago after looking at them online, and thought "wow, it looks bigger on the web" and put it back down without really using it. Bought one from a friend last year kinda to help him out....and started playing with it since I had it in my possession, so WTH, right? That thing is magic, friend. It doesn't look like much in person, but when you start using it, the total brilliance of the design really starts to become apparent. I'm guessing that anyone who's really given a Machax a chance, carries it a LOT. Chops pretty well, easy to do fine work near the handle, not very heavy....it's versatile, and punches well above its weight class. Don't let the size deceive you...just use it and take a selfie with a big grin on your face.

I thought it was too small when I first got one. As a matter of fact, I sold it because of that. Then I got the hankering to own another. You won't think it's too small when you use it. It's a hell of a knife. Here's my first use of it: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1223343-Fun-Weekend-With-The-BK4-(Photo-Heavy)

Wow, terrific thread there! I got a 4 in my cart at TKC as we speak, just waiting to straighten out my Paypal account to pull the trigger.

Thanks Warrior and Winterveil...I already got "you're getting another knife?..."

I just reply "mmmhm...."

I thought it was smaller then it should be when I first got it. however it truly is a magnificent blade just take it out for a spin and see!

I totally agree!
This was my initial impression as well.
It was only after I took it out and truly put it through the paces that I realized the true potential of the mighty Machax!
It's an amazing performer and is a wonderfully versitile tool!

y'all that buy, sell, buy again, sell, buy

you're fickle, and may i say it stupid?

but Ethan loves you, because, you keep buying :D

buy once. buy more. don't sell.

the BK4 is awesome

read the specs. it's not "big"

it just acts big

becomes embiggened...

Bladite... your snark is second to none.

Ground Shrinkage, it looks big in pictures but when you score one and its laying there it looks small. I really like mine for that reason, it isn't huge carrying it on your belt.....but cuts BIG!!

The 4 is definitely a blade that has to be used and in several ways to be fully appreciated. I've got a Cincinnati version and use it all the time. It's become my favorite over the 9. (Don't worry 9, I still love you. It's just, ...well, I love your sibling a little more.) Got a parkerized version on the way from Dex soon. Want to compare old and new.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies! I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who was surprised by the compact size.

I'm definitely not disappointed that the BK4 is smaller than I anticipated - I'm not a big guy, and very large, single-hand blades have never felt quite right to me. Anything over 9" just feels like a chore. (Can I get a "that's what she said"? :p ) Small and capable is a-ok in my book. The BK4 does look larger online, so I just wanted to double-check that everything was kosher.

Warrior, those photos are fantastic! Looks like you had fun out there - with the Machax, and just in general. Makes me remember how much I miss camping. Gonna have to take the tent and gear out of storage and drag the girlfriend up to Maine once all this snow melts off. :D

Thanks again folks!
