I've lately taken an interested in mall-ninja type small concelable knives. Such knives would be neck knives, boot knives and the like. I've found Vox knives, shivwork lil' loco, and various oss thumb dagger type blades. Anyone have any cool recommendations to help grow my collection? Thanks

CA

Some custom makers I'd recommend:

Bud Nealy - known for making covert design knives/carry systems
Pat Crawford
Dennis Cook
Barry Dawson (designed "The Spike" for Cold Steel)
Lynn Dawson

Buck has a new Tom Mayo design in S30V

The Emerson LaGriffe is a personal favorite of mine.

& Take a look at the Laci Szabo site; there's a ton of stuff on there...

thanks for the many suggestions, rifon
I've seen crawford knives, some pretty cool stuff but not exactly my style. still very cool stuff, as for the others, ill have to check them out

I've seen szabo's site, he has a lot of cool stuff and plenty of concepts. Thanks for reminding me.

Have a good time!

imho the very finest concealment FB's are bud nealys.

he also makes great sheaths (i prefer the MASS vs the MCS, by far) which if ya do intend to pack the thing is extremely important, i have bought more than one great FB with a horrible sheath, nealys sheaths are the very best i have seen/used.

nealys and haks are awesome. i have both.

calife, if your handle is an indication of where you live, a neck knife isnt a good idea, from a legal standpoint, that is.

Hi MORIMOTOM

I know this isn't the place to discuss it (Besides, i can't PM) but i can't seem to find where it says i can't carry fixed blades. All i can find is the part where is says the dirk or dagger with an exposed blade is illegal
"24) As used in this section, a "dirk" or "dagger" means a knife
or other instrument with or without a handguard that is capable of
ready use as a stabbing weapon that may inflict great bodily injury
or death. A nonlocking folding knife, a folding knife that is not
prohibited by Section 653k, or a pocketknife is capable of ready use
as a stabbing weapon that may inflict great bodily injury or death
only if the blade of the knife is exposed and locked into position."
Pulled from PENAL CODE
SECTION 12020-12040

If you could help me out, i would really appreaciate it. Thanks

fixed blade knives fall under the dirk/dagger definition.

12020 (a)(4) pc: carries concealed upon his or her person any dirk or dagger.

common misconception, a dagger is not defined as a double edged knife. in fact, i can find no section that mentions double edged knives as specifically restricted. it may be there, but i have not found it.

the only permissible way specifically listed in the penal code one can carry a fixed blade is as follows:

12020 (d) pc: knives carried in sheaths which are worn openly suspened from the waist of the wearer are not concealed within the meaning of this section.

i interpret the sections as follows: fixed blades may not be carried concealed, even partially. neck knives do not fall under the open carry exemption, whether worn openly or not.

however, your mileage may vary, depending on circumstances and the individual officer.

and before anyone chimes in with how messed up california knife laws are, i didnt write it. just passing on the info.

what I'm most concerned is just carrying one concealed. I see it says anything that can be used to cause bodily harm or death is illegal but the next sentence says it must be in an exposed blade position meaning a sheathed knife, folding or fixed, wouldn't matter right?

this is in reference to a folder that is in the open position.

any dirk/dagger carried concealed is a violation.

re-read the areas i have highlighted in my earlier post.

If you cant carry a fixed blade or open folder the speed dialer and mercharness would seem like a great concealed carry option for you. Although i would check the the law on that before you made the jump.

I used to live by bud nealys house/shop and got to handle a bunch of his knives and sheaths. They are very nice but i did have a few gripes with them. The sheath systems that used to use magnets only worked well with the smaller blades although the newer magnet free sheaths are much better. The mcs blades in particular are very flat and thus easy to conceal. In actually handling them though i found that they werent all that comfortable to use for the same reason they are easily concealed. There isnt much of a finger gaurd on most of his designs making it dangerous as a stabbing weapon. At the time i thought the prices were a bit high given the materials, but Bud has an excellent reputation and fit and finish was indeed excellent.

There's actually quite a few makers that make these types of knife.
But what might be more important is the rig that that you carry it in, it should be both well concealed and easily accessible.
Al Polkowski (sp?)
Bob Dozier
Fred Perrin
Hideaway knives, great quality.
Strider too.
And Bud Nealy, who I know was mention, but should be at the VERY top of your list.
Also, Boker makes (made?) some knives designed by Bud Nealy. Even if they aren't still being produced, I'm sure they can be easily found by posting the WTB forum or look at auction sites.

Buck Hartsook is my vote. Cord wrap the handle and you've a concealed blade that can go just about anywhere and is utilitarian to boot.

Personally in the way of fixed blades I've never found anything better than a Dozier small blade custom with one of his fantastic horizontal kydex sheaths under a baggy shirt.

OMG, that phlaunt guy is INSANE! I love it!

Thanks also for the Bud Nealy website; I have heard his name 100 times but never seen his stuff, looks very good.

I like all the many sheath/concealment options with the HAK, the sheath-holder with rivets exactly the same size and color as those on Levi's jeans is genious. Check out the HAK site, the woman has obviously put a lot of sweat, thought, and love into perfecting the design.

Thanks for the mention. I would not call small knives Ninja Knives. In spite of whatever people want to think the majority of what I see carried the street by clients is usually-

Box cutters
Screw drivers
Steak Knives (either from Mom's kitchen or the local buffet) the nice serrations are great for cutting meat. Ever seen someone who got a real good swipe with one?

I would say that the average person could comforably carry a 4-6 inch fixed blade with a little thought about the carry system and wardrobe.

BTW the fixed blade I carry when I can't carry fixed blade is the EKI La Griffe.

Also hate to narrow it this far down but my absolute favorite fixed blade for CCW is the Polkowski Polecat made to my specs.
