Hi all,
I am planning to do some diving this year and I'm going to take my Mean Street or the new 6 inch with me. Does anyone have some good underwater stories they can relate here.
Thanks, Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I have been a diver for many years and I have to tell you that the best knives that I have found are small, sharp (without a point) and made of non-rusting material (such as titanium).
Dive knives can be lifesaving tools, but not for fending off shark attacks but rather more mundane tasks like cutting yourself free of fishing line, wire or other material from fisherman or old shipwrecks.

As a result, I prefer to use one that is very sharp and unobtrusive. I keep it on my BC (buoyancy vest). In that regard a mean street would be the best choice among the Busse line, just be sure to give it a good coating of oil both before and after the dive (as well as a good washing).

Hope this helps!

I generally agree with Contender and, in that regard, prefer the CUDA Talon in Talonite.

The Intrepid is good for the heavier stuff.

PADI Avanced Open Water.

Saw a very unfortunate rescue during my first Open Water Certification dive back in the seventies in Florida. There's a good lesson out of it so I thought it worthy to mention.

If you strap the blade to your calf, make sure it is to the inside of your calf. The rescue I saw was a new diver who panic'ed during a dive and upon attempting to ditch his weight belt to ascend, which he probably would have done too fast and embolized, it got caught on his knife/sheath/straps which he had strapped to the outside of his calf. You probably knew that already Andrew, but I thought I would mention it for anyone else who might dive with their Busse. I wouldn't ever want to see that happen again.

I have always strapped a small Tekna Dive Knife to my console. Never felt the need for a biggee yet. Your "right on" with the Mean Street.

Contender remined me of another incident I saw in the mid-eighties on a dive in Islmorada (I hope that's spelled right, need to check the dive log)during a trip through the Key's. An idiot on a charter we were on got caught in some kind of line. He whipped out his big "Wenoka" (dive knife company for years)and started slicing above his head and happened to slice his second stage hose (hey buddy, champaigne is cheaper and safer). It was a short dive for him but he made it to the surface ok. We kinda felt sorry for him because he was quite humiliated.

I have a good friend who uses a #3 as a dive/spearfishing knife. He loves it! Problem is he hangs his (full) catch bag off of his weight belt a little longer than I would before taking it to the boat to unload. That's another subject.

Anybody ever seen a Barracuda go after some booty (catch) danglin' from a catch net next to someone's leg? Whew!

Good topic Andrew!

BTW Contender: Last year I finally ditched the OLD Dacor "Cameleon" for a new Zeagle "Ranger". Any experience with this rig on your end? I am a little leary of the weights being inside my Buoyancy Compensator!

Out.

Hey GPB,

Didn't know you were a diver as well as a Busse conisseur (sp?). You are a true Renaissance man!

Anyway, I too have a Zeagle BC rig. Not the Ranger, but a slimmer model made for spearfishermen (which is my thing). I love the integrated weight feature - makes the weight belt one less piece of equipment you have to remember to bring and then strap on. I think once you get used to it you will enjoy it.

The console is another great place for the knife - my dive buddy has the same setup.

Did you get the LMS yet??

Yes sir, just today. Didn't have a chance to respond toy you yet. You'll get UPS from me on Wednesday.

Let's go DIVIN'!

I got certified in Crystal River.

No not ren.....man. I have just done waaaaaaayyy tooooo much in my young years.

We were talkin' about Superbike Racin' on the Tactical Forum awhile back. Someone started a thread called "Twist of the Wrist" which was Keith Codes definitive book on the subject. Andrew Pinchen attended a few of those w/me.

WERA A,B,C, Production and A,B,C, Superbike. AMA too. I liked AMA rules better. WERA treated you like a kid. Had way too much cahone's and too much time on my hands at the time! I am a little smarter now!

I'll take your word on the integral weight system, and put fears aside on your advice. I don't carry my blade on my BC because I am afraid I might stab it when I resheath the blade.

Let's go spearfishing. Name the place and time. If you carry your kill for a long time I'm bringin' a Bang Stick though! Big Fraidy Cat I Am!

Let's go DIVIN' MAN!

Hey,

We have a small pond right outside of the shop where you guys could do some "Ohio Deep Divin'". It's simple really. . . you just tie any one of 2,771 pieces of 1" hemp rope that you happen to have lying about to one of your ankles and your ready to go. You get up on top of a John Deere Combine and you're ready for your first dive. Now, it is important that you aim for the middle of the pond (that's the deepest part). Once you've charted your trajectory, you just rocket yourself into the water face first. . . If you do it right, you'll hit bottom pretty hard and you should stick pretty deep into the mud. A couple of frantic tugs on the rope with your ankle as you struggle to stay alive and Bubba Joe (yes, he's our hitman) will back that combine out of there. As long as you've remembered to tie the other end of that rope to one of the front tines, you will most likely come with it. . . . yep,. . . good times. . . .good times. . .

Pair this activity up with some good old fashioned "cow tipping" and you've experienced some of the finest that Wauseon has to offer.

Yours in nuclear diving,

Jerry Busse

Jerry -

your offer sounds titillating, but alas, I think I will pass and go with GPB instead.

Perhaps you can offer it to someone else instead (maybe Andy P) ??

[just kidding Andy !]

Hey Jerry, does that mean we can spear some catfish and carp? Then we could fire up the grill and have some good ol' redneck cookin!

Nope, new picture, contestants dive in with their choice of Busse steel clamped in their teeth and go man to man with the biggest catfish he can find. Winner gets to enter the finals in the river in Toledo. Woooohooo! Can you tell I work midnights?

HDBeav,

You, my friend, have obviously heard of some of the monster cats that inhabit the Maumee River. .. . I'm up for the idea of hittin' the river, but you'll need to bring your own saddle, , , ,those big cats are hard to straddle bareback. . . it's that whole spike on the dorsal fin deal. . .

Jerry Busse

Contender,
If you get the chance to go diving with GPB you'll have the time of your life. GPB is a class act all the way. I'm glad to call him my friend. He also is the one who introduced me to Busse Combat Knives.

I have been away from my PC for a few days and just saw your last post. Andy let me use his to reply as I didn't want to wait until I got home to say "Thanks Man".

We have been here at RTB (Ranger Training Brigade) at Ft. Benning surrounded by Airborne tabbed Rangers hurlin' ATC Hawks. We've been having a blast and thinkin' about everyone back home and at Camp Busse! Glad to hear its warm enough to don the Busse's and cruise!

Thanks for the support from Jerry, you and the whole Busse Team.

Have a good one and check out our new pics on the ATC forum from "Best Ranger" 2001!

BTW: The winners of "Best Ranger" 2001 are "Marines" who are "Army Ranger" Tabbed. To participate, competitors must be Airborne and Ranger qualified.

From ATC to the Busse Team....HOOYAH!!!!!

...OOPS! Rangers, HOOAH.....Seals, HOOYAH!
