Sitting around feeling a little nostalgic. Fall is in full swing, which means winter is just days away and the sun will be gone for the next 7 months. The snow will be flying and I’ll reflect back to the field trip I took to the old Camillus plant.

That trip was the reason I initially hunted down and purchased a Camillus version of the BK10 Crewman. I liked it so much, I decided to put it carefully in the display case (so I would not do something stupid like us it) and make a copy out of a BK7. I’ve enjoyed it.

Well, fast forward to this week and the arrival of my KaBar BK10. Nice knife, but it just does not give me that warm and fuzzy feeling like the old one. Gee, I’d even be willing to trade it straight up for an old Camillus version, in mint or darn close to it condition. Just sayin'.;)

I did put the Micarta scales on my Ritter / Becker, and with the hardware I used, and the holes being just an RCH too small, those handles are on the Ritter / Becker to stay. Original Grivory is still on it, thanks to Derek.

That being said, here is a comparison display of the three knives.

Notice the height of the grind on the Camillus compared to the KaBar. Mine is closer to the Camillus.

My swedge, or false edge more closely compares to the Camillus. I prefer the shorter swedge.

This shot really shows the difference in the swedge grind. I really like the beefy grind on the Camillus over the KaBar. I tried to stay close to the Camillus. Basically, I have to admit, I'm disappointed in the KaBar. Wish they stuck to the Camillus specs.

Okay Al, here ya go. I added the original Camillus version to the mix so everyone can see the difference.

And here is where the Micarta wound up.

Very nice display and comparison pictures. Thanks for sharing.
OTOH. It just starting getting cooler down here and for the next few months it will be enjoyable outdoor weather. Best of luck in your slump, come summer mine will return with the sweltering heat and exhausting humidity.

I like the high grind on the camillus and the wide swedge of the kabar.. :)

7 months?? wow, and I thought I had it bad here.. I keep telling my wife we have 6 months of hell, she informs me I'm hallucinating again more like 3.......

excellent pics and love the knives, well except the ritter....... j/k :D

when it was burning up here this summer I asked folks to post pics of winter ......... it helped me cool down a bit..

I am sorry you are disappointed and I agree with your preference of the old style point, as for my uses I really prefer a drop point. I am getting more and more interested in the 12. Curious, do you think you'll use the new 10 if you don't trade it, or will it be a collector?
Winter's not so bad except for the short days. No snakes and bees, and you can see farther in the woods (assuming they're deciduous and you can find the sun :)

If I can't find another BK10 (vintage) I'll probably end up using the one I have.

Thanks. I wonder if when the new 10s come out there will be anything other than the nos grips and I guess sheath that will be LE about the kbar 10? I don't know if the cam steel is something you can "see". If not might as well use it up:)

TAG,
The version you made is right on the masrk. Good job. I like the BK-10, it would be interesting to me to have the same profile with the BK2 cross-section.

Thank you for sharing,

i have season affective gun shooting disorder.

soon, it will be too cold to spend hours at the range and in the dirt.

guess i'll have to make more igloos :)

i personally dont have a favorite between the camillus and the kabar. I like the higher grind on the camillus, but also like how theres more meat left on the blade with the lower grind on the kabar. I also like the bigger swedge on the kabar, but the lines on the swedge on the camillus. Im so happy to have my camillus back, but cant wait for my kabar in the mail either.

The real question proposed here is pay for a 10 or risk ruining a 7. With no 10 in front of you to copy, it could be scary. I want one!

I prefer the Camillus BK10 over the LEBK10. I think the KaBar grinds were done to make a tougher knife. The Kabar's limitedness makes them irreplaceable under kabar's warranty. I mean sure they can give you a replacement knife, but it would have to be a different model. It benefit's KaBar to to sacrifice a little performance to make sure the knives stay out of warranty situations.
