Underwhelmed by Becker

Finally acquired my first Becker knife, the Magnum Camp. After all the hype I expected more. The knife is not nearly as nicely ground as my CS Bush Ranger which I suspect is also made by Camillus. On the Becker there is very little taper front to back or top to bottom. The blade is ground to something between 1/8" and 5/32" and stays that way practically to the tip. At that thickness, given the width, it doesn't take much taper top to bottom. I'm sure this is not quite the grind intended and not what I remember handling this knife last year at the Blade Show. CS has a program for seconds and perhaps Becker could do something similar.

I don't know how much distal taper it is supposed to have, but I was under the impression that it was evenly flat ground to a fine edge. How thick is the edge on yours?

In any case you might want to consider making a post on the Camillus forum and/or dropping Will an email.

I agree with Cliff, get hold of Will Fennell from Camillus. Camillus is known for making good. Both of my Becker's are perfectly ground and razor sharp from the factory, with a needle sharp tip.

Good Luck.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

I'll add my .02 as well! My Brute came with a great edge. I promptly went out back and chopped down a 3" sappling with it to check it out. It worked great, and the edge is still great. I cleaned it up, and the coating is fine as well. If you bought it new, you might check back with the folks you bought it from. If you got it used, I'd echo what Cliff and sgtmike88 said, check with Will at Camillus.

Averageguy,

Which Becker Magnum are we talking about? The Camillus version, or the Blackjack version. Your post implies Camillus but I am not sure.

I'm referring to the Camillus version. The cut or grind nearest the ricasso or choil forms a progressively smaller notch as it approaches the spine. On a normal flat grind top to bottom of the blade this notch dissapears as you approach the spine. On mine there is actually a notch at the spine, effectively rendering this blade less than 3/16" thick. I'm sure this is within any tolerances that have been set. It was not really my intention to denigrate Becker. It just gets frustrating not being able to see and handle a particular knife before you buy it. It is so nice to be able to see a few of the same knife and be able to pick out the one that looks best to you. I love the design and construction of this knife (although I would prefer a grippier handle). I have every intention of buying another one when I get a chance to see a few, like at the next Blade Show.

I would definately chat with camillus about this. I have a companion and am VERY impressed. As a matter of fact I didn't even like them from the pictures and what I read. I got one in a trade and had every intention of selling it off, but not now. No one is getting this thing away from me.

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

I have two campanions, and both are virtually perfect, and razor sharp right from the box. I would almost guarantee (based upon my experience) that Mr. Fennell will do whatever it takes to satisfy you.Try him on the Camillus forum.
