i have a dumb question to ask,i have a spyderco native 5 with uneven bevels on it,how dose one make then even! do you just sharpen one side more then the other until they become even ! i should have returned this one but never did,so now i would just like to even out the bevel on it,i have never had a knife that came this way before, thanks guys.

Depends on how uneven the bevels are. Pics?

If it's not too bad, you should be able to sharpen it out without much trouble.

Or send it in to Spyderco for sharpening and include a note about the uneven bevels. At worst, it'll only cost you $5 to have it shipped back.

I have a Delica ZDP-189 that is 15° on one side and 20° on the other. When I touch it up on my Sharpmaker, I have a rod in each side and flip the SM around. Evenutally, I'll stop being lazy and reprofile it. ;)

Uneven as in the bevel is wider at the top/bottom or uneven as in its wider on one side of the knife than the other? Pics would be helpful.

In either case you should be able to sharpen it out by maintaining a constant angle on both sides from the ricasso to the tip. Depending on how bad it is you will likely need to use some moderately coarse diamond stones or the like.

If you aren't proficient at sharpening you can always send it off the one of the resident sharpeners here on BF. I've heard great things about Josh at Razor Edge Knives.

I put my own edge on every knife I buy. I really can't think of one knife that was "perfectly" ground by any factory. My Spydercos tend to be better than most, but if you're super critcal about it like I am you'll probably find every production knife is somewhat less than perfectly ground. Some are better and some are worse than others but no matter how uneven they may be I have always been able to correct the edge with some patient sharpening. The more uneven it is the more patient you need to be. Using a sharpening system that sets and holds the specific angle for you will help tremendously.

this bevel is wider on one side then the other, and i was wondering if i should just grind the smaller side to until its even!

If you just sharpen on one side you will create a burr on the other side. So make 4 or 5 passes on the wide side, then make a pass on the other side just to take the burr off.

sorry about the photo, this is the wider side showing on the lower native 5 bottom, but i'll try working on it.

The knife is a tool. If it cuts as good as you need, there is no reason to change the bevel. Think of the unevenness as a sign of hand craftsmanship and hand made in knives is a plus. If it effects performance, send it back to Spyderco.

That's what I'd do. Use a marker to determine the angle of the 'wide' side, then use that angle on the 'small' side.

If nothing else, the effort would improve your sharpening skills.

And you could always send it in to Spyderco and they'd fix it.
