Uneven Grind on New QuietCarry Knife

Wondering whether this would bother any of you to the point of returning the knife. I recently bought a QuietCarry Eddy in CPM20CV direct from manufacturer. Blade came with some minor scrapes, as well as a pretty uneven grind, making the tip look crooked. Photos below.

I emailed QuietCarry, and their response was basically, “you can return it or exchange it, but the grind is not going to be perfectly the same on both sides, so no promises on what the next one will look like.”

I get that this is just a $100 knife, but the quality and the response are disappointing. Thoughts?

I also found one listed on eBay that looks fine as far as the grind is concerned.

I agree with Whitedog Whitedog on this. If it was a custom, handmade $$$$ then I’d worry, a lot actually. So If the action works well and you like it overall, use it.

I don't know, I'd say the response was pretty good. They told you that you could return or exchange it, and they were honest about the possibility that another knife might have the same characteristic. They didn't tell you "Tough luck. No refunds". And it's not like the uneven grind makes the knife unusable or unsafe.

I agree with Whitedog and Duramax.

Absolute perfection is a hard thing to come by in a $100 production knife, and even in some expensive customs.

If it were my knife, it would probably bug me, so I would use a hone and even the grinds out.

Thanks for the responses. I have a bunch of knives from larger companies like spyderco and benchmade, but I’ve never had one arrive with an uneven grind at the tip like this. If it’s not going to hurt performance, I’ll hold onto it.

That's nothing. Sharpen it out. I've had benchmades and spydercos with similar tips, it's not a big deal. Few minutes on a stone and most I'd it will be gone.

Uneven factory grinds don't bother me as long as I can sharpen it out. If I can't fix it myself I would send it back.

Yep, wouldn't bother me either. I've got grinds like that on more expensive knives.

I had a hinderer xm18 like this, 1/2 of my Spyderco and 90% of my cold steel come with uneven grind. Not saying it’s acceptable but it’s a very common thing.

If I get a new knife with an uneven grind, I just put it on my Hapstone and fix it. In my experience few production knives come with a perfect grind, heal to tip on both sides of the blade. But when you think about it that is not surprising. As far as I can tell from videos I have seen and the edges I have observed. The knives are sharpened by hand on a powered belt grinder. The guys doing it probably sharpen hundreds of knives every day. A few passes over the grinder on the first side of the blade, Flip the blade over. The same number of passes on the second side of the blade. A quick check that it is sharp, and on to the next one. I really think they are highly skilled craftsmen, but it's a production job. I think it very unlikely that they have time to obsess over any one blade.

O.B.

the secondary sharpened edges are uneven, those are not grinds. the grind is the sculpting of the blade so its not a flat piece. the secondary edges can be fixed or made even by sharpening. it seems you are examining a honda accord expecting porsche tolerances :)

If I liked the knife, I would just reprofile the edges and set them to the angle that I wanted.
