Uneven taper on blade back on BM 940

I don't think the taper is uneven it is just that the grind on top doesn't end perpendicular to the spine. Should not pose a problem.
 
That'll have zero effect on the knife's function. I've had blades from most major manufacturers come like that. Either the jimping is a little crooked or a grind edge is a little off. Doesn't bother me.

I can't say how common it is but it's not particularly rare with any brand. I wouldn't let it bother me.
 
If the knife is "otherwise perfect", you got a good one. Individual grind variations very common. Sanding w/ differential pressure on that slant will bring the 2 planes in line if you're into that sort of thing (I am).
 
I caution on the replacement route! The new one may have a perfect grind there, but it could have a bad edge grind or a poorly centered blade. It may not have as good fit and finish or other issues. No knife is perfect, be glad your problem is so minor. My 940-1 is not exactly perfect. It has more of an arch than a straight line.
 
It's not common. I had a 583-1 that looked just like yours but on the larger knife it really looked bad. They replaced the blade under warranty, problem solved. They will do the same if you ask. 'Honed_Edge' above makes a good point though, but IMO the warranty service process is pretty good.
 
You paid for the knife if it bother you send it back . What's acceptable for some is not for others . That's a $189.00 knife you can be picky for a knife at that price .

I had something similar on my carbon fiber 940-1. Benchmade was great, though. They replaced the blade and everything was free (including shipping). Only took a few days.
 
Despite errors in outgoing boxed product, in many trips up for warranty service Benchmade never failed to please. I did have one knife they couldn't repair, and was asked to pick a different model from the current catalog, and they built it for me and what arrived was flawless. Thanks to the Warranty service staff and high marks for their excellent work done to make things right! :thumbup:
