This summer my wife used the chain saw to prune a bush, well last saturday, I tried to use it and, oh well, off to the shop it goes

this morning I go to see Mr Smoot (our local chainsaw guru) he had it repaired, The best part is that we got to talking and now I have a source for worn out; files, chainsaw blades, mower blades and other stuff. He said he threw out 2 55 gallon drums of this stuff last year. He was happy to give me as much as I could use.

Do you know anyone in lawn mower and chainsaw repair?

Good one Eric! If I decide to do some damascus in the future that would be an excellent source.

Eric, do you know what steel is used in chainsaw bars, i have quite a few but don"t like to use material unless i know what it is,thanks

I don't know what's in the bars, I do know that the guys have been using the chains to make demascus and I was promiced an unending supply,

on the other hand, why don't you heat some up and play with it. See what happens and give us a report.

Some of those chain saw bars are already laminated. They have a center core of a different steel than the outside plates. I havent played with mine yet but suspect it would make a good blade with the proper grind, heat-treat and etching.

The bars are laminated but not thoroughly enough to make a knife from without some forging. At least from what I've seen, they have the middle and the two face peices spot welded together all the way around the edge and in several spots throughout the middle. But it looks like there would still be voids if you tried to just grind it as is.

I have used chainsaw bar to make knives and good ones too. Sone bars are o-i, 1095, and some are laminated. i have had the best results from fom the 0-1 and the 1095. you have to do a little research with each brand to determine what steel is in the bars.
