So I recently got two unfinished buck knives from my grandfather.

He is 96 years old, and doesn't remember anything about them.
My grandfather was a very skilled craftsman and machinist in his day, and I'm sure he intended to finish these knives himself.

Any information on them would be much appreciated. As now I intend to finish them myself.

Thanks,
Alex

These are Buck 192 Vanguard, made in 1994.
Other than that I can only guess they may have been a kit. It looks like the blades, brass, and wood have not been finished.
It will make you a great project to complete.
The other Buck Guros can tell you more about them.

The steel is 420HC. You'll need belt-wheels for hollow grinding as this would help the work go faster. It can be done by hand without equipment and it will go slower. Just progress thru sandpaper grits from 200-1000 grit and then decide if you want a polished blade. The 192 Vanguard is a very popular model of Buck's and will make you a good hunting or utility/ woods knife. Come up with a large jar of elbow grease and good luck. DM

hummm .. to my knowledge buck did not let "kits" or finish your self knives out of the factory..
these look unfinished...
if your grand father was in so cal it is possible some one dug them out of a dumpster while diving or
a employee got them out of the factory and gave them to him
which makes them "lunchbox knives" which happened a lot ..
I am sure you can finish them nicely and would like to see them when done

He is in San Diego, this seems very likely.

Thank you all, I will post pictures when complete.
