Hi folks just brought a boker magnum hawk from heinnie haynes here in the uk and the knife pivot screws are absolutely shagged.
I know its only a budget blade etc but still not happy
Ive contacted them today and they have offered to accept the returned blade and replace it.
Looks almost used but came shrink wrapped in packaging etc.

Are those pivot screws replaceable to save me returning the knife... what would you do please? Posting pics not obviously strait forward on here so ill read up how to and post them.

I say just forget about it and buy something better.
All of the boker magnum knives are overpriced garbage, the same exact cheap Chinese knives are available for $5-$10 under other brand names like Mtech and such.

Someone here will come along and recommend a better alternative for you.

Boker knives are decent, but I honestly wouldn’t bother modifying it. I agree that you could spend a few bucks more and get a much better knife. Here are a few brands that offer knives on budget that are worth taking a look at.
Ontario
Spyderco
Spyderco Byrd
Civivi
Buck
Artisan
Kershaw

don't own one.
and never will...

if your mind is running wild
and have grave concerns;
you might actually
be better of sending it back already.
first impressions have a way of
haunting you.

I've never been impressed with Boker in general and especially not the Magnum line. Just my opinion, of course, but to me it's a company full of decent designs with poor execution. Their fit and finish needs "refinement".

Boker Plus and Boker Tree brand are generally good knives. Boker Magnum knives are generally rebranded garbage. I'd much rather have anything else from that list then a Boker Magnum.

The only Boker I own is their Automatic knife line. Never failed me once. And the only problem i ever had from it was from user error. Never tried their regular knives and never will.

There are high quality budget knives and poor quality budget knives. I rank Boker Magnum as very poor quality. Better to spend even budget money on better, more reliable brands, like those already listed in a previous post.

I like all my Solingen-made Böker knives. My little Barlow is as refined as any production knife as I've seen. I have less experience with Böker Plus and I've never handled a Magnum.

I have several of the Boker Plus CLB (Chad Los Banos designed) knives and have had no complaints. Well made knives, good value for the price at the time I bought them a few years ago. KeyCom (2), WharCom, SubCom, and Hyper.

I don't know about the Magnum line.

Thanks guys, i got a boker magnum pakka hunter i think its called and its a great quality knife the refinement is better than any other knife i have so i order another boker mentioned above and its miles and miles apart in quality terms....the pakka hunter is rounded its solid, lock up is perfect, nylon and phospher bronze washer, smooth action no hot spots or sharp edges sooooo impressed with it....its amazing how knives in similar budgets by the same manufacturer can be soooooo different....this new blade is full of rough edges, rounded screw heads, scratched metal scales, poor blade finish and damaged at the pivot 1 huge nylon washer and 1 small nylon washer, filler in gaps between wooden scales and the metal furniture...its like a reject.

Heinnie haynes were great and said send it back no problem we will refund you. I ordered a rough ryder cotton sampler buckshot from them and can't wait to get that knife i love that classic look and lines.

To make things clear, Boker magnum knives are all literally rebranded gas station knives and always have been.
I have a boker magnum from 20 years ago and it's just as crappy as the boker magnum knives of today.

It's best to not even think of these knives as Boker products in any way.

Hi, here's the straight goods.

You have an accumulation of knives that is mostly junk. You sound a bit young and new to this; you started in December.

Stop buying knives and start learning about them. Anymore you spend on cheap knives will be sunk costs that you can't recover and use for nicer knives.

You have enough knives to use now. If you want to collect knives then now is the time to learn and discriminate before purchasing. I highly suggest finding a way to get anything in hand first before buying it unseen. Don't be the person who just looks back at what they've done with regret.

Please please please get yourself a Byrd Knife or Cold Steel budget line. Either will correct what was lost here. If you go Byrd you are basically getting an Endura or Delica you will see these thrown around in almost every conversation on this forum. Legendary ergos and function. If you go Raven you are getting IMO an improved Spyderco Tanatious. If you go Cold Steel you are gaining the Triad lock. Arguably the strongest lock in the planet. Also gaining good ergos . I recomend:
Byrd Cara Cara2
Byrd Raven
Cold Steel Prolite
Cold steel tuff lite

All are also going to be arguably better steel.

Thanks for your straight talking danke 42 i appreciate a straight shooter.
I think my issue is that i see a spiderco for example and ive held them.and i just dont see why they cost what they do because yes they are a great brand and have ok steels etc but put them next to a ganzo for example i can't justify that cost gap.

This latest purchase is the only knife im disapointed with in fit and finish. Yes i am a budget purchaser and i want to collect and to use every now and then (i carry a knife everyday)
I am young i guess at 36, thanks for the compliment ;)

I earn good money and can buy better knives but its a case of i see it i like it...and i also think if i but a ganzo that is close to an ontario rat 1 for example in handle shape etc i can see if i want to spend the money on the pricy blade.

How i see it.
Im very keen to learn and altho im happy with sharpening etc i need more practice to get an even grind free hand on both sides, stropping i have nailed now and can get a shaving sharp edge.
Im learning about different grinds but the next important thing for me is learning about steels so cant wait to learn from you folk on good steels for what applications.

Thanks again for all your advice i really do appreciate it the good and the bad :)

It's the details you can't see or touch till you use the knife well.

The heat treat and edge retention. The steel and the overall design.

It's easy for someone like Ganzo to steel by simply standing on the shoulder of giants but that doesn't show the whole picture. Never mind the sheer dishonour of the theft itself. Think about someone who's willing to steel from another to enrich themselves.

If they will steal from Benchmade or Sypderco's pockets they will also steal form their customers.

A leopard will never change it's spots.

The problem here is that your knife was made by a bunch of thieving jerks who didn't give a damn about you, the knife or the brand. They figure if the thing looks good enough to photograph, they can get money from your pocket and you would either be to ignorant or ashamed to ever call them on it. Don't deal with these people. The knife community is rich in excellent production companies and independent makers; who know how to respect their customers and who go out of their way to produce many of the best knives that anyone has ever experienced. These knives are often as inexpensive as the thing that you just bought, but they are made to work.

Spyderco's Bryd line is their entry point for future Spyderco customers, and an excellent line of knives that mimic many of their classic designs at prices and quality levels that are very affordable.

Kershaw knives are another excellent entry level knife that can range from under $20 to around $150. Their higher end line is ZT Knives.

Cold Steel is a very innovative company that makes a huge assortment of products for all levels of users. Their Tri-ad lock is considered by many to be one of the strongest folder locks on the market. Despite their over the top marketing style, they make many good solid knives at a wide range of price points.

Ontario, is best known for their fixed bladed knives but they do makes a few really good folders (the Rat series) at very reasonable prices.

And there are many others out there like them. Go with a knife that you like from one of these companies and you will still be happy with the knife 20 years from now.

Remember: no one is holding a gun to your head to force you to buy junk. Stop doing that to yourself. Pay attention and you will end up with much better knives.
