Hey all. I picked up a well used but decent 572. The blade is stamped Union Cutlery Co on one side and KA-BAR on the other. On the KA-BAR side there is some very faint etching that looks like it reads "PETERS BUFFALONIAN". I googled the phrase but didn't come up with anything. Anyone have any history on it? I was planning on cleaning it up and using it but if it's something of value I'd rather not ruin it. Kinda hoping it's not of value cause I wanna use it.:)

Here is what I'm looking at.

I do not know the meaning of your etch and I have tried to find out about it since I have one marked similarly with fiber spacer handles. Your knife is a very early 572 with the "fat" or "blob" pommel and one black and one brass spacer at each end. I am sure the model number 572-5 will also be stamped on the guard. I am a collector so I would hate to see an original etch cleaned off as is done so often even if the knife is not wildly valuable. Do you have the original sheath with it?? KA-BAR/Union Cut would etch knives for a small fee for any individual or company, and many are found with retailer's or owner's names etched on them. It would be nice if somebody chimed in with the meaning of "Peter's Buffalonian". One theory is that it was done for a sporting goods store called Peter's in Buffalo, NY, but I have not been able to see if this is true or not.

Thanks for the reply. I do have the original sheath and it's got some cracking but is complete. It has KA-BAR on it and someone hand carved the initials HZ into it. The guard has 572 stamped into it but no "-5".

I have no idea, I have never even heard of anything like that. Interesting. Maybe Bernard Levine Identification Thread??

With this post as a reminder of tidbits hiding in the weeds, I did some more google searching and eventually found the email address to a local historian in Buffalo NY and thought

"Duh, let's ASK someone from Buffalo."

So, based on a guess that the Buffalonian might have been in Buffalo or at least Erie county (especially since one of the newspapers is "The Buffalonian"), I asked the man if he could provide me with any information about who Peter was and what was his "Buffalonian".

Now the waiting game begins. :D

Well, that went over like a lead balloon. My email bounced back with a "DNS error: domain name not found", even though the domain name apparently exists because there is a web site active. Maybe the email server is on vacation. Or maybe the email address is deactivated due to a change in historians. Will continue to follow Alice.

Did a google search on the historian and found that he is now a film producer based out of Buffalo and Rochester, so I resent my query to the info email address at the film company. Maybe the intern that reads the info email will actually pass my message on to the head honcho. :D

Zzzy, there was a sporting goods store in Buffalo, N.Y. named Peter's. There is a publication called "The Buffalonian" or perhaps it is no longer extant since I cannot access their site. I tried the same as you did, no positive proof, but I believe the sporting store is the correct answer to this etching. Let us know if you find any more info.

Well, my historian must not be that good a historian. :D

He responded with a brief "Never heard of anything like that" (re: "Peter's") and told me that Kabar is owned by Cutco in Olean NY and that he did a TV show about "them". I am assuming "them" refers to Cutco.

Since I had told him that I was a collector of Kabar knives, I think he must be loopy to think I wouldn't know where they were located/ who owned the company. :D

"And that is a knife...it has a sharp side called an "edge"...its used for cutting things such as food, material, and every so often...people..."

Yeah, gee thanks Mr. Obvious! Well...good effort anyway Zz!
