This page was posted years ago, but is worth a look for anyone that hasn't been into knives that long. I never saw this page before and since everything including opening videos are all on one page I thought I would share it. No doubt some of you have seen these before, but I think it is worth taking a look.

https://blog.knife-depot.com/15-knives-with-unique-opening-mechanisms/

I enjoyed a 5 minute detour on this page, hope you get a kick out of them.

The Kershaw ET was the first thing that came to mind before opening the article. I nearly bought one at least 6 times, but decided spending money to cut myself was best left to balisongs;)

Speaking of Kershaw and weird, my late father in law bought me a Ripcord for Christmas probably 15 years back or so. I still have it somewhere, but it is a knife that comes with its own special hard belt sheath. The knife has a round opening in the side of the scale and the sheath has a metal male stud that fits inside. When you pull the knife free from the sheath, the stud rides in a groove and forces the blade out the front of the handle. The stud then sort of just slides out the grove and a piece of spring steel in the handle locks against the bottom of the blade's tang. To retract the blade, you have to slide it back in the sheath and the mechanism works the same way to close it.

Kinda slick. Kinda gimmicky. I never really found a good use for the knife. I was scared I would lose or break the special sheath and then my knife would be useless...now its just lost somewhere:P

Bro, weird you post this, I just handled one of those knives in a pawn shop a few days ago. Weird knife!

D Rocket katanax and UpKnife model 1. The katanax you press the button and slide blade forward and backwards. The UpKnife has a mini bolt action on the left that slides the blade up and it springs closed when you release it which powers the glass breaker on the bottom!! UpKnife has a cool video on their site about this and newer models.IMG_20210116_203706.jpg

Friggin' a, mate... thank you for posting this!!

I was recently trying to recall and search more about the designer/maker of that ScorpioDesign Shapeshifter EDC and, for the life of me, could not remember. Now to see if it's even possible to hunt one down.

GREAT pics ! I was hoping to see this stuff and appreciate taking the time to post. Since the last time this was brought up, I think that all things knife- collecting, practical use, innovation, and especially the insane world of under $200 knives has exploded. This strange time in history has driven lots of folks to "re-activate" their outdoor pursuits.

Hunting and fishing licenses have been up, the NICS gun purchase system has been setting records month-over-month, and from what I have seen the fact many of us aren't commuting as much and aren't spending as much time with friends has lead to more time hiking, camping, and turning that gas and lunch money into a little bit of spare change for other things we love.

Safe to say most of us are OK with spending $100+ on a knife and the industry is giving us what we want! I would go so far as to say that this is a "Golden Age" for us.

Share if you have some unusual stuff, I could look at these for hours. And if anyone has a weird knife you want to add some glow in the dark accents to, PM me and I will make time to do it for you. Absolutely not for money, I don't want to start any commercial enterprises right now. I'm working on adding glow to a Ferrum Forge Dao for myself as soon as I get some projects for friends finished and so far the priming and base layer looks good. I'm grabbing some pics now...

They're both better-known than some of the relatively obscure knives in the original article, but I'd put the AD-15 and Provoke in this category.

Here's the start of my Ferrum Forge Dao. I have an (unpaid) project for someone in the works but put a few minutes in this. I'm trying to make it look like the Death Star and a planet about to get blasted. Cheers or jeers so far?

Very cool, I appreciate you posting that. I have a ring I converted from my wedding band to have the Empire symbol with an emerald in the center. It would match nicely. Now I want a star wars knife.

Man I was hoping that link would have the A.G. Russell Funny Folder. I could not remember what it was called or who made it but that was the one that stood out, to me, as weird opening.

First two things I thought of when seeing this topic: ET and Ripcord.

Love the ET, have several, a very cool knife. Carried on a limited basis eons ago.

Carry a Ripcord every day on my current job. Have had it since they were introduced and always thought it was one of the coolest knives ever.

This is the first thing that came to mind for me as well. I play with mine more than carry it, but that little thing is just weird and kind of neat.
