This one arrived yesterday and surprised the heck out of me! While I have several knives from Canadian Steve Vanderkolff, this little 8" Feather Dagger is the 'classiest' yet. The blade is textured 440C with bolsters and top half of the scales of Matt Walker damascus and beautiful abalone covering the bottom half of the handle. It is definitely a 'looker'.

I have noticed that Steve is making some really fancy knives as of late. This one definitely fits into that category. Pretty darn nice.

I like the idea of the textured blade, it adds dimension to the piece.
My only criticism is why didn't he use the same small screws on the damascus portion of the handle as he did on the abalone? The big screws really turn me off.

Very cool. The overall shape and flow are very nice.

So the pattern on the blade is texture? Do you know how it was done?

Not sure why Steve used the larger metal screws with the damascus other than they work well with the toughness of the damascus while the small 14k gold pins work well with the beauty of the abalone. Myself... I like the effect of both the screws and pins.
From what I've been told, the 'feather' texturing was hand done by Steve with a Dremel tool. I have never seen a blade quite like this!

Hi Guys
Thanks for all the compliments.
The texturing on the blade was done with a Dremel tool using a small carbide head. As for the screws, they are 2-56 screws, which are really actually quite tiny and it had to be screwed on in order to etch the bolsters properly.
The original blade was patterned after a Wolf Loerchner knife that I saw in on of the "Points of Interest" books.
Thanks
Steve

Jewelers refer to such a finish as a "stone" finish....it is commonly used to provide a more scratch and ding resistant finish rather than using a high polish in areas such as the sides of rings. Beautiful work, Steve!

I am truly 'lucky'! Usually when I see pictures of a knife for sale that catch my eye, I find myself thinking something like..."I like the shape; the size; the handle materials; etc." Then I may visit the pictures another 4-5 times before asking if the knife is still available and finding out it's been sold! When CPKnives posted pictures of Steve's dagger... one viewing is all I needed and the deal was made! And Mr. Vanderkolff, you deserve all the praise you have garnered... fantastic craftsmanship! Hope we can expect to see more of your handiwork.
