I posted this on the Best of 2007 thread .... but let me introduce her properly!

Anyone who knows my collecting habits will know that Rodrigo figures very high in my favourite short list of makers. Whilst exchanging mails earlier this year he happened to mention he was working on a variant of his Peck award winning nouveau integral pattern. He asked if I would be interested in it ........... bit of a strange question really, kind of like asking a bear where he'll be sh........! Anyway a few weeks later he sent me a picture with a very clear message that this would be a unique offering, the difficulty of the construction would preclude the possibility of any further orders. Shortly after telling him that if he sold it to anyone else there would be a contract on him, I remembered to ask him to explain a little more about the difficulties in the construction, his response was as follows:

"The knife is unique because I don't want to receive orders for it... The work on this knife is very tricky to make. It's hard to forge it, keeping the 90º angle of the handle to the blade, splitting the handle with the same curves on both sides... Grinding is also difficult, because the grinder does'nt reach every surfaces... Carving the nouveau design, fitting the wood perfectly... That's a kind of work I like to make without pressure of time and money... There's a lot of things that can go wrong, and if it does, I can put it aside and work in something else."

Needless to say, despite these difficulties Rodrigo has once again managed to deliver work of incredible technical and aesthetic achievement, and once more I am blown away by the step up in FnF which I previously thought to be MS standard on my earlier pieces from him. We have seen elsewhere the stunning integral bowies and fighters Rodrigo has produce, this piece in more inline with the Brazilian Gaucho type pieces, and goes to show just how versatile and talented this maker is.

I will let the picture do the rest of the talking, but first a summary of the specs:

Blade Length: 8in
OAL: 13 1/2 in
Steel: 52100
Handle: Rosewood Burl.
Construction: Full forged integral, hidden pins in handle.
Sheath: Leather with Shark Skin.

Wow, this guy has real vision to conceive of something so unique - and some serious skills to pull it off. Just an exceptional piece in all respects. Congrats!

Impressive, indeed. It's reminiscent of the European/Russian attention to fine lines and carving. THAT is a compliment, believe me.

Stephen, how far down the spine does the channel extend? The outer border on the 'frame' defies the fact that it's an integral. Amazing.

Stunning photo display. Especially noted is the darker blade allowing the surface finish to show. Most worthy!

Congrats to all!

From my perch I would say Sfreddo is part genius (design) and part masochist (execution). It's an oxymoron knife by virtue of combining (successfully) polar opposites--classic and extravagant elements. Premature to call this Sfreddo's Holy Grail knife, but it might well be a contender.

We all have kinds of form we like or do not care for. I have really not been that personally fond of Sfreddo's "style", but this one absolutely bowls me over, from a technical AND a style standpoint. I have decided to always take a second and third look at his work from now on. I think I have been missing out on alot by just looking past his work. This un's a real stunner!

Stephen,
I can't understand that you would like to have such an ugly knife in your otherwise excellent collection. ;)
I will do you a favor.......send it to me and I will put it next to all my other not so pretty knives:D

All jokes aside this is an other example of the great talent that Rodrigo is. His progress in FaF is amazing.
Luckily it's my turn again somewhere in 2008.

PS Care for a bite and a drink sometime soon?? I need to see this and the other new ones, like the Hancock, very badly.

Coop .... the channel extends to aroun an inch or so from the tip, the borders remain a constant thickness.

Thanks for noticing on the image .... its the little things as you know full well!

Nice piece. I'd like to see a detailed pic of the butt if you have the opportunity.

wonderful knife Stephen. It blew me away when you posted in the other thread. Too bad he does not want to something similar but maybe I can twist Rodrigo's arm. Will be something else to add to what I want from him. Great knife for sure. Love the photo too.

Very Very nice Blade one of if not the nicest gaucho styled blades I have seen. I have a Dogo Argentino a hunting dog from argentina and have seen many gaucho stled knives. By far thib is the most complex (build wise) and flowing I have seen.

Simply superb.

I think a persiany blade profile with that handle would be "off the chain"..... so to speak ;)

GREAT STUFF Rodrigo!

GREAT SCORE Stephen!
