United 48 Knives

they dont look all that bad.

however, they only describe the steel as "stainless", which of course probably means it is a low grade 420 or equivalent.

they are probably made in china, then marketed by united cutlery.

you can do much better for the same money.

Has anyone seen the United 48 series of blades. I have no idea of the manufacturer and I've only seen them one place, and yet....the knifemonkey on my back is interested. ANY info would be most appreciated.http://www.trueswords.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=United+48&search_in_description=1

This high-impact resistant, tactical combat knife is designed to withstand extreme conditions. This knife features a solid full tang 7 3/4" clip point blade constructed from solid black anodized stainless steel with a razor sharp edge. The impact resistant handle is heavy patented Kraton construction with thick gripping power. The item includes a reinforced heavy duty ABS sheath with nylon belt loop. This knife measures 13 1/4" overall in length.
Judging by the description, the price, and the fact that only one store has them, I would bet that these are
- made in China
- made of whatever stainless knife steel is available.
- Bought by this store through an importer and rebranded as "United 48.

Edited to ad: Mercy, beaten to the punch while I was writing. At least someone else thinks the same.

They are United Cutlery brand knives and Smoky Mountain carries them too. The spec sheet on them lists 440 stainless so my guess would be 440a. I'm thinking about the machete and seeing if it'll hold up to some heavy use.

I have the drop point, not used it as of yet.Definately made in China it's pretty beefy and more handle heavy than blade heavy sharpness is okay pushed and pull cut newspaper but not awsome.actually ran it over my kitchen knife steel rod and it cut better.as far as steel i'm no expert it's listed as 440 would need to have a look at the blade to see if it's marked on it. Sheath is basic plastic with tie down holes and slots. I attached a small hard cased digi camera case to it with a small tobacco tin survival kit in it.For what i paid i'm happy enough but only using it my next trip (hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks time)i will know a lot more.

Looks like a hybrid of the Cheaper Than Dirt heavy use knife and a Becker series form Kabar.

Here's a link to on old thread on the CTD: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=488736

And there is a Becker subforum in the Manufacturers forum area. Info on the Kabar Beckers is there.

Granted, the KabarBecker would cost 3x more than the United 48, but I would think the Becker would last a life time.

thx - cpr

I wouldn't get it, it's a Chinese stainless copy of a Becker. Just save a 30-40 more, you could get a nice Ontario sp knife.

If I remember correctly that Cheaper than Dirt Heavy Use Knife held up better than some of the much more expensive blades. "Made in China" isn't necessarily a bad thing these days, they are quite a few good quality blades coming out of that country these days. If you do get one let us know how it works for you.
