United Colty M4-K

United?

Junk, with a capital UNK. :barf:

Handle material = Anodized 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum
Blade = 440 Stainless steel
Designer = Fred Carter

Why is it a bad knife???

It may be bad, it may not. The problem with United is, we can't know from experience, because experience says they cut corners on steel, heat treat, and manufacturing quality. Like S&W, they may even have a few good models, but they don't sell enough in this ommunity for us to say which ones are OK.

Look at CRKT or Spyderco or Cold Steel for inexpensive folders with a history of bang for the buck.

These seem to cost ~$50 on US web sites. Even at that price you can do considerably better than the steel they offer, and possibly the quality as well.

While I agree that you can get much better folders in this price range, in Europe it doesn't get much cheaper than Wolfster. Due to taxes, shipping, etc, importing them from the US usually won't save you more than a few bucks (depending on the price difference, it may actually be more expensive) and it's quite a hassle.

I have owned several United Knives in the past, and they were all very crappy. I got rid of them as soon as I could, at a loss.

United Cutlery does make some junk, and I have seen some knock-offs with their name attached, but I think this particular model is nice. Nice materials (440A notwithstanding), good design, unique lock, and it's very lightweight. My uncle picked one up at a gun show for about $30, and I wouldn't have let him buy junk (which he almost did). Just my opinion.

we sell some of them at the store i work at,,,

i would pass as you can do better for your money..

they are crap...

you asked,,,we answered....you seem to still want it.,..so...time will tell ...good luck

I wouldn't call it a direct knockoff, but the knife in question looks fairly close to a Microtech SOCOM Elite to me.

That's certainly true. While living in Germany a couple of years ago I ordered a Fallkniven A1 from a US internet dealer. When the knife arrived I got a note from the post office to come pick up the knife - and pay 25 euros in tax to do so. The total cost was still less than the price I had seen for A1s in the knife shops in Frankfurt, but the 25 euro tax closed the gap considerably.

The manufacturing may be less than impressive, but the knives Fred Carter designs for them at least look good. I doubt he's copying MT or anyone else.

So move to New Joisey!! :D

I have an Outdoor Life liner lock made by United for which I paid about $14 at K-Mart.
Yes,they do cut corners,eg,they use plastic washers where the blade axis is.I may even have to use bolts one of these days to repair it.The bolt that holds the blade seems to be aluminum;and one of the body rivets is suspect,it is nothing more than a rod with machine punch divets to widen it somewhat.
I have already made due with home made plastic washers to better secure the blade bolt and nut.
That being said the knife seems to be strong to a fault:I can not think of a reasonable situation in which the lock would fail,or even for the blade pivot bolt to give way.
I have faith that I can use this knife to kill a pit bull if need be.
Time is the enemy here and I am sure that eventually I will have to use bolts.
It was worth what I paid and more,because it is easily repairable and as cheap as dirt.

Let me put it like this. Over the past three years, I have spent about a thousand dollars on knives that I have sold in the past year for a sum total of about 500 bucks on here and eBay. They were impulse buys. Everyone on this site has an opinion. Do some research on the particular knife you are looking for, familiarize yourself with the common steels used in the market, look at your needs (I have several knives that I will not part with that do the same job), and try to handle the knife in person (hint, leave your wallet in your car when you handle the knife, if you bring the wallet along, you're leaving with that knife right away).
