Let me start off by saying I don't own anything made by United Cutlery, since I have always heard most of the stuff they make is junk. But, I've always wanted a Cold Steel Tai Pan, and this seems to be a close copy. Why not just buy the real deal Cold Steel? Well, let's just say at around $250, I paid less for my brand new Remington Wingmaster back in the day. I don't want it that bad.

So, at $40, this thing is less than 1/6 the price of the Tai Pan. I'm not expecting it to be as good or better as the Cold Steel offering. But, I don't want to buy junk. I don't want to waste $40 on something that is going to break or chip opening boxes or cutting cardboard. What am I going to use it for? Nothing really, just to add to my collection.

So, does anyone have one of these, and what do they think of it?

I personally don't care for it but were all a little different. 99% of the time I carry a folder in my pocket. The other 1% I have a straight knife. I would not carry a knife such as the one you have pictured. I prefer to have a knife that you sharpen on 1 side of the blade. Just my 2 cents worth.

The blade is made of the legendary 440 series stainless steel. Which means it could be anything as long as it has iron and carbon in it. You can't even be sure it's heat treated at all, LMAO. It will probably look quite cool but $40 for this dagger is more expensive than $240 for real Tai Pan.
I say don't bother. If you want a cool dagger that works get a Boker Schanz. Real 440C and massive, with micarta scales. You can get it for less than $100 and it's a real knife.
The Tai Pan of course is still king. ;)

If it's a "collection" piece...who cares how good or bad it is? If you aren't going to use it for anything, the only thing that matters is if you think it's cool enough looking to buy. Get it.

If you intend to open boxes or cut cardboard with it: 1) why would you do that with a dagger; and 2) get a Mora for 15 bucks, it will do that stuff (much better) and not break on you.

It's cool if you're just going to look at it. Not sure it would standup to hard use, but I bet it would wail on the occasional box you need to cut up.
Just keep in mind that it's not a 'working' knife. BTW can you even carry a dagger (both sides sharpened) in your jurisdiction?

No, I'm not going to use it to open boxes. I never said I was planning to carry the thing EDC. I know the thing is probably 440A, I even saw it listed as being made of 420, although another place claimed it was AUS-8. I really don't care if it can hold an edge, like I said I'm not going to cut down hordes of zombies or groves of redwoods with it. I already have more practical knives like Delicas, Eduras, Griptillians, SAK's galore, Moras, etc. I just think it looks like a cool fighting knife. I even bought the Cold Steel Nightshade version of the sucker.

I checked out the Boker Schanz. It looks pretty cool, but not as cool as the Tai Pan!

No it doesn't, but at least it'll hold up well, whatever you want to do with it. I don't know of any production dagger that matches the Tai Pan in looks or build, certainly nothing at a lower pricepoint.

Sounds like you think it looks cool. And all you want it to do is "look cool." So, it's perfect. Buy it. Enjoy it!
