It appears, after 4 movies, that UC is finally coming out with a functional (presumably) Rambo piece:

I have heard that it will either be in D2 tool steel, or 1060 carbon steel. Does anyone know for sure which it will be, if it will be heat treated or not, and what the price will be on it? I've seen someone pre-selling them on ebay for between $110 and $185, but they'll probably be cheaper than that when they are released.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

February BLADE magazine article says it's made of D2, Hibben will only make 100, and they'll go for $1,200.

$1,200. for a 1/4" thick, 2 lb., blunt tipped machete with only a 12" blade. Sounds like a bunch of marketing hype to me. If all you're paying for is the fact that it's a 'movie knife', then I'll just stick with an Ontario Machete.

I agree with xdshooter: yawn.

if it is from united cutlery, i seriously doubt it will be d2, 1095, or any quality steel.

The "officially licensed" $149.95 Chinese reproduction "has been hand forged from a single piece (ooohhh, single piece) of 1060 high carbon steel by the same artisans who forge high quality Samurai swords".

:D

The actual Hibben piece has been discussed ad nauseum. The one that Hibben is releasing is the real-deal handcrafted custom piece that has passed through the hands of the master. It is fully functional, but of the $1200 price you are probably paying $100 for the function and $1100 for owning a limited licensed replica of a movie knife that was crafted by one of the knife community greats. There are better users for the price if that is important in this particular knife purchase. If I had the scratch, I'd plunk down the 1200 bones in a heartbeat and stick it in a safe. I'd be able to put my kids through college in 20 years with what that bad boy will be worth.

As for the UC version. Ya get what ya pay for. I'm sure it's going to be a large hunk of soft steel with bad grinds and a bad wrap grip. I know of several production blades that will get you the same performance. Or, there are several custom makers that could craft something similar in the $200-$400 range.

You guys are busting on UC probably don't know that they have indeed made some fine cutting implements in the past. The original "SEAL" machete I owned with the Birdsong Black T coating in ats34 was a very excellant camp tool. Matter of fact it was probably one of the better large survival/camp knives I have ever owned. The other nice UC I owned was there UZI folder made in Virginia. All American made, and if you look at the knife you will see that TOPS markets the exact same knife except they call it there CQT series and put a couple of extra cutouts in the frame and the G10. Can't speak much for there other stuff only what I hear. But the two mentioned above were pretty damn good. keepem sharp

PS Both U.S. made too

what are the hibben pieces worth from first blood, rambo 2 and rambo 3. purchase price when new to what they are currently worth. since they cost so much to begin with did they really apprieciate in value.

+1 on the Ontario Machete. The 12" model almost looks like the Rambo one only the tip is not clipped. I bet you could by a 12" Ontario Machete for around 20 bucks, have it sent to a custom knife maker and ask if they could mod it up for you and you would have probably a better knife. Especially knowing it at least was handled by a skilled knife maker.
