United Cutlery

38 total weapons for $6,000.00 = 158 per knife/sword..

I dont think they would cost that much brand new would they?

I wish I had the e-mails of those bidders, I've got some beachfront property here in Phoenix that I'd like to sell...

Quite a few of the knives mentioned are still available. The average price that you could get them for would be under what is already bid.

The people that collect these kind of knives and swords are generally of a different breed than the ones that hang around BladeForums. They are more into the form than the function.

that's not to say we don't honor the form here...

It's just that we cring at pretty much anything by United...

I would say that those knives have their places amongst "soon-to-be-bladeforums-members"...

We'll probably see a rash of "What's this knife worth" threads any day now...

Absolutely NONE of those knives are still currently available in the retail market except maybe the versions of the 2002 model Tigershark. All the rest are only available in the aftermarket and many of them go for $300 or more. You can still get regular production models of all the editions from '95 or '96 to present but the gold editions and the first run editions are no longer being produced. I notice he did not have the gold edition of the Warbirds which I have seen for sale with display plaque in a store in Savannah, GA for $11000.00.... that's right, $11000.00. I was just as shocked as you when the guy told me that!!! I am one of those rare collectors that appreciate form as well as function and I collect Hibben knives by United. There are people out there that will pay a pretty penny for some of the models listed.

Not true, Mike Turber who started BladeForums has a pretty sizeable collection of Hibben UC pieces. IIRC he proudly displays them on his tv.
United Cutlery sells a ton of knives, so somebody enjoys them. It's not that strange that some go up in value.

Let's try to keep this in perspective, a $1000 custom Art Knife that's never going to be used and a $100 Wall Hanger, both serve their intended purpose. Different strokes for different folks. Putting down any other knife collectors choice, does no good for Knifenutz at all.

My apologies for stating that those knives were still available. If I had looked closer I would have realized that these were Gold or 1st run editions.

I think that most of us appreciate the form and not just the function of the knives that we own or covet. It is also probably the case that quite a few of the people that collect United Cutlery Hibben knives also like other more functional knives as well.

As far as I am concerned it is not which knives we prefer, but the fact that we all love knives that really matters. As a community we should be able to accept other members preferences and we should not ridicule them because of our biases.

I have noticed a lot of "snobbery" in the past since I have been a member of the fourms here concerning "form vs. function" and especially when it concerns United knives or Hibben knives/fantasy knives. It used to bother me but not any more. I started out collecting knives because of Hibben/United cutlery products and I still get the gold versions of all the Hibben editions. I love the way they look but at the same time I have never taken one out and beat on it.... I have a Hibben Raven that I have used for mundane tasks but nothing that would constitute "abuse"... It does suffer in edge holding ability compared to some higher end steels but it would handle anything that 90% of the knife buying public would ask of it. I have another United knife (Shark Hunter) that I have beat on quite a bit... not sure of the steel but it holds up decently... Those are the only United knives I have ever used (and probably ever will...). I have my Beckers and my Cold Steels to beat up on all the time and my high end collection has a few high dollar production pieces as well as a few customs. There is something out there for all of us and some of us like a little bit of all of it if it is knife related.

I ordered a knife from Knifecenter.com designated "RG-81" and made in Japan by Rigid (which is a United Cutlery brand), and it has to be the best value in a knife to be found anywhere on Earth. It's a lockback folder, about 4.5 inches closed with a shaving sharp clip point ATS-34 blade. The handle is checkered G-10, and VERY ergonomic. It locks up like a bank vault, without any blade play whatsoever.

Knifecenter.com has them on sale right now for $29.95, and in my opinion it's easily worth double that price. For anyone on a budget who's looking for a good self-defense folder, I strongly suggest you check one out.

It doesn't bother me about fantasy knives. In fact I'm attracted to some of them.
What bothers me is that UC does create some function knives that are very sloppy with a very low end steel (and I suspect without a good temper anyways). That annoys me and make me steer clear of UC.

UC is okay. Not a fan myself but I know people who are ecstatic about it and who pay a lot of money for those limited edition runs or autographed pieces.

Their 'funcional' knives however don't seem to be of very 'usable' quality (this is more of a subjective thing though).

The company that really gets to me is Fury. Some of the most sloppy QC and workmanship I've ever seen on a folder...even for the price...

For you UC lovers,

If you want to see a UC piece on a TV show, don't have to wait long. A week ago, I sold this company two sword of Earth and two Knight's dagger. They are doing the props for the upcoming TV show "Twilight Zone" on UPN. A knight is going to be carrying both the sword and the dagger. However, they didn't tell me the date tho.
