Did Bocote grow in Washington state say about 150 million years ago? :D

I do agree it sure looks right...

anon1 - Have you ever peined pins in stone? Have you ever drilled a precision straight pin hole in a stone scale? Can you see the fit line done in stone? sheesh..... :jerkit:

I can take a pinned wood scale off in 5 minutes. If I told you HOW to take a stone one off you problably couldn't take off one in an hour.

Red - My first thought was Zebrawood, but the knife scales are not as dark as a finished Zebrawood would be. I think Mick R. is right.

Also, is petrified? Kind of curious. There seems to be some reddish tint to it, and I don't remember any "red" in Bocote. (Drawing on my feeble memory from my cabinet days...)

Anon - anything hard and brittle is a cast iron b!tch to work with, on a small scale such as a knife. Years ago, I tried rescaling an old SAK Huntsman, with an old Corian material, and when that blew up, I tried acrylic. Finally glued on some Kingwood scales, with 30 min. epoxy. Those scales ares till tight, even after soaks in mineral oil, warm water, and even a cleaning with acetone.

With the right adhesive, scales are on for good.

thx - cpr

orca8589 - Yes it is petrified wood of a very rare type with both the grain and color preserved. I believe it is from here in the USA and it was tropical here back when the dino's were also walking. So, if Bocote is a Jurrasic period survivor it may well be Bocote. It was done with the only slab I had of this wood and the buyer is following this thread.
