I am looking for a good all around knife.
I am currently looking at the CS SRK and the TOPS Storm Ryder. I am only interested right now in a sheath knife with a blade length minimum of 5 inches and a maximum of seven. I am debating over high carbon steels or stainless. I am looking for a knife that is not to expensive. I am canadian so I get raped on the conversion of canadian to american currency. To make matters worse I am a student with a very low income. Any help is appreciated.

I don't know what amount you can afford to spend, but why don't you check out the knives at http://www.ICCKnives.com These are designed to be used and abused and still hold an edge. Yes, I know, I'm the maker and this is probably pretty ballsy, but when you have a good product, if you don't speak up, no one will ever know you're there. I used to be in the Special Forces and believe I know what it takes to be a good universal knife. Take a look.

Some years ago I bought a Cold Steel SRK, principally because of the good things I read about Carbon V steel.

I have a number of knives, mostly folders, of various blade materials and grinds, but none take an edge like that SRK. I've invested a number of hours with stones and hones in an attempt to produce a superior edge on knives with more expensive alloys such as ATS34, 440V, etc., but none of them can beat the edge that the SRK produces.

Carbon V rusts easily, requiring some care, but in other regards the SRK is a good choice for a tough hard-use fixed blade knife.

I've no personal experience, but a lot of folks rate the Fallkniven S-1 very high. Better steel than the SRK, but I don't know the price comparison. Also, fewer complaints about the handles going loose. Knife Outlet sells the S-1 for $85.

Check out the For Sale forum here. You can pick up great deals on knives. I just picked up a Bush Ranger and Kobun a few weeks ago! If you have any questions about the Bush Ranger, feel free to e-mail me.

SRK is nice, but the Bush Ranger is a better slicer. The SRK is the better sharpened pry bar though!

Kevin,

You might want to check Murray Haday(sp?) at Pro Edge. I believe he is the current Fallkniven distributor. Since he is in Canada, that may work in your favor for both mailing costs and currency conversions.

Sight unseen, I would tend to opt for the Fallkniven S-1 in Kydex. Very good knife at a good pricepoint made with good steel.

The Cold Steel CRK is a sharpend prybar. If you are going to outright abuse a knife, this be a feature with advantages. You also see them ocassionally very cheap on the Individual For Sale forum on this site.

The Tops Storm rider is a good knife as well but, if your budget is really tight, probably a little too expensive.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

I bought a Tops Steel Eagle 7" and have loved it ever since. I have only read good things about their knives. You cannot go wrong with a TOPS.

AWSOME!!!! the TTKK is simply the best all around knife that I have seen.
Trace is great to work with, you won't be sorry. The only problem is that there will be a wait (as with most custom makers).
