UNK as an every day carry knife?

After watching Scott's videos and seeing the pics from his hunting trips I am more tempted to order a UNK. I am thinking of replacing the SMF that I am currently using as my EDC. I have a desk job but 2-3 times a week I am in the warehouse inspecting product and using my SMF to open the cardborad boxes that our chain comes in. I get tired of opening and closing it and feel I would be better suited with a small utility fixed blade.

I am torn as to which steel I might choose. I have one knife from Scott in A2 and four in O1. All of them are great performers!! My attention is now focused on S35VN after the comments Scott made about the performance of this steel. I do live in the Pacific Northwest and we do get our share of moisture so I am very interested in some sort of stainless steel.

Is anyone out there using the UNK as an EDC knife?? Please feel free to offer suggestions regarding steel choice and handle material.

I'm not using one of Scotts blades for EDC yet. But I do carry a BK11 and find it much handier than a folder, especially if you're using it alot throughout the day.

I prefer micarta handles, and for a blade that'll see cardboard alot, I'd go with the S35VN.
I like carbon steels as they develope a personality and character that you can't get from a stainless.

Thanks for the reply. I have not been a fan of stainless steel fixed blades in the past, mostly because I have no experience with quality stainless in a fixed blade.

I do love the character a carbon blade will take on.

Micarta will probably be the handle choice, that or yellow G10. I am a huge sucker for yellow G10!

That would look wicked! Especially once the blade took a nice patina. Scott did a BB Tusker for a forum member a lil bit ago in yellow G-10 and it looked it awesome!!

Yeah, I've got a BB Tusker 5/16ths thick in yellow G10!! I love it!!

It's become my EDC. As far as the steel choice, either CPM 154 or CPM S35VN are going to be excellent. Edge holding is amazing. Forgot to mention there will be an article at some point in the future about the UNK. Writer Mac Overton has one to evaluate and will be doing a write up about it. He is very fond of the sheepsfoot pattern blade and was excited to see a modified version of this blade style.

I would much more prefer a fixed blade for EDC than a folder.I think Scott's UNK is one of the best designs out there for a utility fixed blade.Might have to get one for my 3rd purchase. I am with you on handle choices I love micarta and G 10.Some yellow G10 would be sweet on one.

My UNK hasnt left my pocket since I got it. Its seen a ton of use. Its perfect for edc.

I have a UNK in CPM154 and I carry it as my edc. I have to say that it is my favorite knife. I put it on in the morning and carry it all day. I got mine after deer season so I haven't had the opportunity to use it on game, but I've done everything from open mail to baton kindling for the wood stove. The edge looks untouched. That CPM154 is tough stuff and with Scotts grind, you can make fuzz sticks all day.

Mostly it rides on a length of paracord around my neck, but I've also set it up as an inside the waist band appendix carry. Just put a short piece of cord through the top 2 holes in the sheath and tie it off to the belt loop.

You won't be sorry with this knife! Hope this helps.

Snakedoc,
I have the first UNK Scott ever made and have carried it as an EDC since 2009. I went with CPM154 as I wanted less maintenance for food prep and wet conditions. The knife is amazing. I have performed tasks from light cutting to deer field dressing to batoning kindling for firemaking either in my wood stove or campfire. Scott jokes that I have batoned a cord of kindling wood. I haven't noticed a difference in edge holding compared to O1 steel. The blade though short is strong and the sheepsfoot shape is tough and practical allowing better control. It fits the hand in a variety of positions and holds. Scott did a great job with my design thoughts bringing this knife to life. I was honored when he decided to carry it as his EDC. Scott was the first person to discover the UNK's abilities as a hunting knife. He was very impressed after processing 3 deer with his UNK last season. I haven't tried the S35v steel, but will probably order my next UNK in that steel.

The knife was designed as a neck knife and I have carried it on a piece of paracord around my neck or in the side pocket of my Carhartt pants where it fits nicely. In uniforn, I carried it in the back sap pocket. Sharpshooter makes a wallet type sheath which works nicely as well. If you order one, get the thinner 3/8 inch handle scales for a flatter profile. As Hayseed stated you won't be dissapointed with a UNK, it should surely become your favorite EDC. PM me if you have any questions. Take care.

Thanks for the comments so far from users of the UNK. Even though I'm making the design I still give the design credit to kahuana. He felt that this modified sheepsfoot blade design along with a PSK knife handle would be a great combo. I did modify the PSK knife handle design by sloping down the back more.
I've been emailing back and forth with dannyboyleather about the UNK and he said that he heard that S35VN is like a stainless A2 steel. If that is the case, I'm in stainless steel heaven. :D

Awesome, thanks for all the comments. I am really thinking that I need a UNK.

Scott, would you consider extending the tang a little past the end of the handle scales, enough to add a lanyard hole? I would want to carry it in my front pocket probably in a leather sheath and would prefer not to run a lanyard thru the handle scales.

Really? Hmmm......I likes me some A2.

That mod to the PSK handle is a winner. Paired with the finger groove, it really makes for a comfy solid grip.

I had Scoot make one naked and added Lacewood scales; as a remodel contractor I carry it in my overall ruler pocket. It has seen expansion foam, cardboard boxes and misc. hard plastic packaging and handles all with ease. Great, easy to carry and use blade. The design is a perfect EDC carry for me and much better then a folder. Mine is in 1/8" A2 steel and has become my go to blade. THANK YOU Scott!

woodysone, that's some awesome feedback. Much appreciated. And great job on those scales.
