When I scored my first DB head the other week, I also landed this 4lb unknown felling axe.

It was a good deal, but had been described as 'very sharp' and 'ready to cut'.
That couldn't have been further from the truth, it was full of dents and was incredibly dull.

I set to it going steady on the belt sander, with a sanding block & 180 grit, finishing up with soft backed 240 grit to de-burr, and a hand strop with my palm.

After touching up the old 70/80's Draper the other week , I wasn't sure about the long helve, but I do think it's manageable with correct technique. I'll just have to practice, with strictly.

My bro said it was 'too sharp'...but I got home to a pile of curls so I guess he approves!

The double bit will have to wait a while. I'm waiting on my new "farmers own's" and a big bottle of vinegar!

Thanks for looking folks.

Did you happen to test its hardness with a file? I like the file to cut with some difficulty on a properly hardened axe.

At 4 pounds and with a 36" handle (is that right) it should be a splitting demon.

Can't argue with the results. That's a sharp axe.

True enough.

I wish I knew the maker....guess I'll never know. It only has '4lb' stamped on the underside of the poll.

It does have a nice *ping* to it too. It felt quite hard when I was sharpening it, I didn't use a file though.
Still waiting on my new old stock Stub's and Sandvik Farmers Own/Reapers files to come.

Yup, almost bang on OAL length. The edge is 5".

I like the bevel you put on it. Looks just right. The handle looks different from my stash with the long neck yours seems to have.
What kind of woodstove is that I like the size. My Franklin fireplace needs to be replaced soon.

Thanks CD. I'm still a relative noob at this malarky, so I'm still learning.
I've been trying to study and put what I've learned into practice.

It's different sharpening these European heads with there meatless cheeks.
The thought of sharpening my DB head is a bit daunting.
I'm aiming to go slow, with files, so I don't goof up!

The handle does have a big, long straight shoulder, pretty common on axes of this type here. Although it does make me wonder if it's not hung, or seated, deeply enough.
The eye is 'sealed' in with some resin.

As for the stove it's a 'Jotul F 3 CB', and is wood only. Apparently it's the best selling small/medium cast iron wood stove in North America (if you believe the manufacturers website). It is a good piece of kit and kits out some heat when it's going full whack.
