I spied this axe at a local second hand establishment. I suppose it can be used for anything you'd like but would anyone know if the pattern is designed for a specific purpose?
Most likely a form of large chisel/slick. Spuds are used for prying the bark and are usually socketed as a result. If they used a tang and ferrule assembly, they would surely use a more robust and longer ferrule than that one. Its form shows that it's intended to resist pushing forces but not prying ones so much.
